OSU has a slew of talented OL, even the hard to find premiere tackles. OSU is thin in the secondary, even if a few of the incoming youngsters pan out.

While we do have a "slew of talented OL" and all but Cordle will be around in 2010, only Brewster is a proven commodity (Browning has been inconsistent). I'll relax about the OL when all five of the starters perform solidly on a consistent basis. It doesn't matter if Henderson is our #1 target and Joyner is #2 or vice versa, we need to get them both. |

The depth chart at CB consists of a promising RS Frosh (Howard from Krop), an injured upperclassmen (Amos - who might not heal), an athlete who switched to CB and might play pro baseball (Torrence), 3 true freshman, and a special teamer thus far (Evege). 4 of those 10+ you listed are safeties (Wood, Domicone, Johnson, Pentello) and not ideal candidates for CB. There are a lot of question marks at the db position, especially corner... and there are a lot of DB positions to fill against the spread offenses around the b10 (UM, NW, ILL, Minn, PSU, etc) I'm confident Tressel will fill the holes at DB, he always does, but LJ would be the perfect headliner to accomplish this. So that justifies his inconsistency? Quote:

Not at all saying we shouldn't go after Joyner...we definitely should, as hard as we can. I'm just not sure if he's our #1 target, which shouldn't matter as long as we recruit him as hard as we should. |

Let's say OSU has another standout frosh CB from the 08 class, and let's also assume Howard is as good as the practice reports say. That gives OSU 3 CBs, 1 of which would only have 1 season with LJ before graduating. That's a very thin secondary. Perhaps Amos will finally recover from his injury, Torrence won't play baseball and Evege will emerge, but until that happens, I think it's pretty safe to say the CB position is thin. They may need a true frosh to break out to give them a 3rd corner. Quote:
1 starter + 3 frosh + 1 hyped rs frosh + 3 backups which all have big questionmarks. Quote:

Based on our history over the last 8-10 years, with few exceptions we haven't exactly been OL U. We've cranked out a few really good individuals (Bentley, Stepanovich, Mangold), but we've yet to have a season where the OL as a unit has played solid all year. "Block O" and Norwell may turn out to be as advertised, maybe not. OL is the hardest to project talent. You can't assume a certain percentage of 4* or 5* recruits will pan out, so you keep trying to get as much top talent there as you can. |

Who did we lose besides Jenkins??? Washington...his head was not in the game. Washington could have been an AA this year but chose to not have his head in the game...It may have cost him Millions.
Chekwa...very very good corner Hines...he can play safety/linebacker/star for me any day Russell...is solid Coelman...stud Domicone...was scout team player of the wekk many times...he will get reps Howard/Evenge/Amos will have to fill in the other corner spot. I have even heard Johnson named mentioned. I'm not one bit concerned about safety/Star/Nickelback. The corner opposite Chekwa is a bit of a concern but I'm sure someone will step up. One thing to consider is that our DL will be amazing. Early in the season it will help protect the new corners until they get their feet wet. I don't think there will be a better secondary in the B10...not even close. PSU lost everybody...Illinois lost Vontae Davis. Maybe MSU will be close with Wiley & CO(IDK if he went pro or not). I say sit back and relax...Corner is one position you cannot have too stud at. |

So this is where me and jwins discussion went...
![]() I agree with billmac earlier...if Amos is near 100% it'll be him and Chekwa at the corners and Russel and Coleman at safties. Obviously losing Jenkins hurts but we should still have a solid secondary... |

A move was defintely warranted (from LJ's thread), though it should be noted that our discussion was generally about 2010, when our top-3 safeties will be gone, amos might be, and chekwa will have 1 year left.
I'm not too concerned about the secondary this year, nor am I panicking about the CB starters in 2010 with studs like Clarke, Brown and others coming in. Depth is a concern. |

Milli your "discussion" with JWins pertains to this thread IMO so I guess we are ok.
I undertsand both arguments. On one hand we look great but you can always point to the lack of experience at corner. IMO we have 4-5 guys that can play Safety/Nickel/Star very well. I would say we have by far (not even close) the best safeties and nickels in the conference. If you think we are worried about our secondary look at other teams in the B10. Our Dline will be amazing and that will help. The only team on our schedule that can exploit our corners is USC. IMO there were alot of skill players(especially WR's) graduated in the B10. I think if we can get past USC with a "W" then our corners will have a chance to improve dramatically by the time Bowl season comes. Look at the WR's and RB's lost in this conference. 3 of the top 5 RB's in the country gone!!! PSU lost their top 3 WR's. There are other teams that lost AA defenders PSU lost both DE's , Illinois lost Vontae Davis, and Iowa lost King and Krull(sp). We are looking great for another B10 crown. |

Well even in 2010 we will look good at corner and probably not as good at Safety. IMO Chekwa stays but you never know. I think Domicone is gonna open some eyes this year. Hopefully we get a glimpse at Oliver. Orhian Johnson might get some DB reps...hopefully. We will see but DB and WR are positions I rarely get nervous about. Wasn't 2006 the year we lost 9 starters on defense...it will be fine. DL is the only position/positions I worry about on defense.

I'm not ready to say our D line will be "amazing". But it would help if they are just "solid" and healthy. And stay out of trouble of course.
Now, if Chekwa gets hurt we could see someone like Corey Brown get a serious shot at playing time. Or we could be playing a safety at corner. ![]() |
