Nevermind he was a true freshman that didn't come in early and was thrust into a veteran team 4 weeks into the season after being on a college campus for only a few months...You honestly believe he won't be improved by leaps and bounds by our game this September? He didn't lead the Big Ten in passing efficiency or anything like that.

He still had more yards than any QB on USC's current roster... I like our QB situation way more than anything USC throws out there.

I hope Mays plays closer to the line because I think our passing game will be the primary source of yardage next year.

Mays close to the line = blitzing. It will be interesting if OSU elects to focus on the pass because the secondary is the clear-cut strength of the defense this year.

There is no doubt Mays will be a blitzing maching for the Trojans in 2009. The kids is built to play as a hybrid LB/SS as it is. Add to that Everson Griffen coming off the edge, and I just don't get that warm and fuzzy feeling

Jim Tressel rarely installs a game plan that focuses primarily on one aspect of the offense or the other (running vs. passing). He believes in total balance. Whether he gets that production or not is another story, but he loves a balanced attack, as do the Trojans.

With our current roster and experience (and inexperience) at such positions as QB, OL, and WR, I think it's fair to say that the passing attack is simply going to have to be more effective than it was in 2008. That all starts up front along the offensive line, where Ohio State will be starting a very green left tackle, a transfer from Michigan at guard, and a big question mark at right tackle (Browing or Shugarts?). Not to mention an athletic QB still trying to improve his overall skills, and young, but very talented WR's in Posey and possibly Taurian Washington.

At the end of the day, if our offensive line can play with some aggressiveness, we just might stand a chance.

I think we need to run more options to freeze the blitzing. We have some shifty fast backs coming in with Herron. I want to see some quicker developing plays against USC blitzing defense, and then a great play action pass.

I disagree about the option. Running the option against well disciplined, fast, athletic teams will not work. Your QB will take some big shots and the yardage will be minimal.
I was really excited at the beginning of last years USC-OSU massacre because of the playcalling. Boom was running the ball very well out of the shotgun and the passing plays were short and sweet. We were getting nice yardage.
I think that we are going to have to run a lot of shotgun, a lot of PA to keep the secondary honest, and many short passes and screens to counter the blitz packages that USC does so well. Throw in an occasional deep ball, and some QB draws.
USC blitzes so well. I watched all of their games on TV last year and was very impressed with how their linebackers blitzed. They put all three at the line of scrimmage and you never knew who was coming and who was dropping into coverage between the LB's and the DL. Anyone with a little more football knowledge know how the best way to counter that sort of attack?

Conventional wisdom will tell you that screen passes out of the backfield usually keep blitzing linebackers honest. However if you've got a smart QB who can recognize coverages and blitz packages quickly, a la Troy in his Heisman season, quick slants do the trick also. Ask yourself: How many times did Troy take a 3 step drop and throw a missle over the middle to a diving Hartline or Gonzo? Lots.

IIRC Boom ran for 5+ yeards per carry against USC. The interior of our line will be alot better. I say run right at them.

Mays didn't come out this year for one reason. He is a big hitter but is out of position alot. I think we can expose his undisciplined play. The Buckeye WR's are gonna have some serious speed this year. I say play action early and often...not on 3rd down either.

I guess you are right. The option Florida runs is more of a read option, rather than a speed option or a power option. Thus, Tim Tebow doesn't take huge defenseless blows often.
I like the read option, I guess when I said that I was thinking more along the lines of the speed/power options.
