The Ramp Entrance, at least from the fan's perspective, is the way the band takes the field. To call it the best pre-game ritual in college football would be a collosal understatement. It is much more than that. My favorite moments with my grandfather were spent in the 'Shoe; and it is sharing The Ramp Entrance with him that I miss the most.

The Ramp Entrance @ Night is something that my grandfather never saw... at least not with mortal eyes. But I promise it will bring tears to yours if you are there.

I did record the ramp entrance from my perspective at the Penn State game last year. But I was in the north endzone and actually taped it from the railing where they come out. So I didn't get the wide entrance onto the field. I just taped them coming out. The cool part was the drum major getting pumped up before he came out as he was banging the baton on the rails before running out.

I will have to grab that from my computer and load it up somewhere for you to see if you want.

Ohio State
The record might be better than the team. While the Buckeyes will be tremendous in 2010 and beyond, thanks to terrific recruiting class after terrific recruiting class, there will be a year to rebuild a defense that loses five starters and an offense that loses seven including Beanie Wells and receivers Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline. Even though there?s a massive talent void with so many all-stars gone to the next level, the not-that-bad schedule could mean another BCS appearance with only two games that OSU could be the underdog: USC and at Penn State. The second toughest road trip, behind the date in Happy Valley, is at Michigan. However, if the team needs a year to jell there could be problems at home against Illinois, Wisconsin, and/or Iowa.

Call this a rebuilding year before a monster 2010 campaign. USC always reloads with new superstars waiting to take the place of the departed ones. However, considering the program has only gone unbeaten once in the Pete Carroll era, and considering there are some major personnel changes, the potential is there for this to be USC?s first season since 2001 with more than two losses. Most of the defense needs to be replaced, both kickers are gone, WR Patrick Turner is a key veteran off to the next level, either Mitch Mustain or Aaron Corp has to prove to be ready to handle the attack, and there?s an overhaul in the coaching staff. Of course, no one?s going to be crying any tears for a team that?ll still be the star of the Pac 10 going into the season, but a stretch of six road games in eight would be trying for anyone. Fine, so USC will likely be 10-2 at absolute worst, but it?s not going to be a national title team without a few minor miracles.

True, then again our stubborn refuse to play a soft defense in our base package and even worse mentality that night against UF really didn't help.

However it wasn't as if the unit itself was bad throughout the course of the year, they definetly played to par pretty much all of the scheduale.

That was the band's entrance into the stadium concourse and the end of our march from St. Johns over to the 'Shoe following Skull Session. During this time we sing "I wanna go back", stretch, get a cup of water from the concession stand (by this point we're all pretty dehydrated from a long morning/day of rehearsal and skull session in full uniform), do row cheers and other traditions, and get ourselves mentally prepared for ramp and pre-game.

I've never seen that, because by the time it happens, I'm always in my seat, soaking up the atmosphere in The 'Shoe.

I've loved The Ramp Entrance for twice as long as you've been alive, and I respect (and envy) the hell out of you for being a part of it. Same goes for Script Ohio.

And I thank you for that. I'm always disappointed when I go down the ramp and see the stadium (even block O ) half full. We need every seat filled during warm ups to make the atmosphere as electric as possible.

This entire off season I've been pondering getting a pair of spy camera glasses and a wire for the USC game so the common fan can see and hear (one can't truly know what a ramp is like unless they experience it first hand) what a night ramp is like through the eyes of the band.

what's the thing the drum major does in the tunnel while you guys are waiting around where he uses hit baton like a spear and hits some metal sign on the wall? i can't remember what the sign says.

I may be wrong because I don't spend that much time on that side of the ramp, but I believe that's the insignia that's on the drum major's uniform (a buckeye lief surrounded by a circle of Ohio's). He does it to let the stadium know the band is coming.

AMEN!!!

Those of you who admonish your fellow Buckeyes to be loud on gameday should pay attention. Being early is as important as being loud. Late arriving crowds care less, and are therefore naturally quieter; but there is definitely a positive feedback effect enjoyed by a crowd that gets there in time to get the 'Shoe shakin' for The Ramp.

Be early, be loud, be a Buckeye dammit.
