I think the only thing Brees proved was that HE can excel in the League--he does not appear to have done anything to change the NFL's beliefs/bias about QB height, otherwise Troy Smith would have been drafted a little higher than the 5TH ROUND.

You can also argue that Brees' accomplishments in the NFL kept Smith from being undrafted (ala fellow Heisman-winning mobile QB Charlie Ward).

I'll put this out here: If Masoli has a solid season, let's say 65%+ completion average, 5/1 or better TD/INT ratio, and 3,000+ yards passing, while leading Oregon to a major bowl game and 10+ wins, he'll bail.

And yet that ridiculous assertion that Masoli may enter the draft after his junior year continues to fester in the Boyd thread. Look at it this way--if you hadn't made the comment that the Oregon depth chart at QB might not be that bad because Masoli may enter the draft after his junior year, then you wouldn't be fighting this losing battle that 6'0" QBs are just as desirable as 6'3"+ QBs, simply because one (Brees) has hit it big. FWIW, that proposition, although unsupportable, is still more defensible than the claim that Masoli will leave college early for the NFL, IMO.

For what? A QB job in the CFL? Or a Darren Sproles-like role in the NFL?

Given that Masoli had a completion percentage under 57%, was barely over halfway to 3,000 yards passing, and was nowhere in the neighborhood of a 5-1 TD to INT ratio (13 TDs, 5 INTs), it is even less likely that he's capable of reaching your "solid season" standard. Willing to admit that the likelihood of him declaring for the draft after next season is virtually zero? |

I never said they suck, I said he won't get a fair shot. Rarely do 6' QBs get a fair shot at the NFL, with Brees and Vick the exceptions. Troy Smith was a monster at this level, the one knock on him was his height. If he had been as tall as JaMarcus Russel, no doubt in my mind he would've been the #1 pick. |

I never he would. I said if he had a good enough season, he'd forego his senior year and enter the draft regardless of what anyone else says about his height. |

You declared it completely irrelevant.
1) how many players do you know that don't even look at their draft grade before going pro early? If it's irrelevant, then why even look at it? 2) sports are littered with players who think better of themselves than their play justifies. Draft grades often serve as reality checks. They can choose to ignore their advice, but it was still involved in the process. 3) If this was simply about masoli's attitude, and not also about arguing against the height stereotype holding him back, then you would not have thrown vick and brees in our faces defiantly. |

If Troy Smith was 6-5 he'd have six Heismans.

1.) Didn't Sanchez just declare despite the fact his draft grade says he's not first round material? If he didn't, you just shot you insinuation that all players look at their draft grade before deciding. If he did, it shows that not all players put a lot of weight of draft grades and that Masoli declaring after a strong junior season (should that happen) shouldn't be a stretch. 2.) My point was that Masoli won't let height dictate his decision. 3.) "Defiantly"? Quit with the schoolgirl theatrics already...Dude, get a [censored]ing life...seriously. Stop mointoring BP Spy like an obsessed monk... |

He has been waiting on bradfords decision for a reason. He can now play his way to the number one qb, something masoli will probably not have the chance to do. A second round grade - which we don't know the context of (pre rose bowl? With Bradford?) - doesn't prevent his chance of playing his way higher. Quote:

Agreed. When Masoli wins both Heismans next year, he's gone for sure.
