Steve Snapp, Ohio State Associate Athletic Director

I know that there is already a related thread, but I didn't want to put this info in that particular thread if possible. As always, I trust the Mods will arrange it in a way that they feel is best.


Steve Snapp is currently the Associate Athletic Director for Broadcasting / Senior Advisor to the Athletic Director. He is probably best known for his work in the OSU Athletic Dept. as the Sports Information Director.

Steve graduated from THE Ohio State University in June of 1973 with a B.A. in Journalism and joined the Department of Athletics a little less than a month later as Assistant Sports Information Director. He was promoted to Associate Sports Information Director in 1978, a position he held until 1988 when he succeeded Marv Homan as tOSU Sports Information Director. In 1998 he was named Director of External Programs, but resumed his duties as Director of Athletics Communication in March of 2000 and was named Assistant Athletic Director the following Fall. Steve was promoted to Associate AD in 2003 and his current position of AAD for Broadcasting in 2007.

With over 35 years sevice devoted to Ohio State, Snapp has been directly involved with so many of the teams & individuals (and so much of their success) whom we are all proud to call "our" Buckeyes, not the least of which was one Wayne Woodrow "Woody" Hayes. Snapp was the Assistant Sports Information Director the last five seasons that Hayes coached the Buckeyes. In an article about the legendary Buckeye Coach, he recalled a now humerous incident regarding an away game at Penn State. The team used to travel in two planes. The "First Unit" and Coaches flew in one plane, known as "Red One". The "Reserve Players" and the Assistant SID flew in the other, called "Red Two". As they approached the airport the pilot told Hayes that they may have to divert to Harrisburg because of fog...meaning they would have a long bus ride to State College. Hayes would have none of it. "Send in Red Two." He said. "If they make it, we'll go in."

Steve Snapp has been a part of National Championships, involved with the development of many of our favorite Buckeye Legends from many sports, & in no small part has helped to shape the history of our great athletic programs over the past 35 plus years. His service to the University is outstanding and he is a prime example of what it means to be a Buckeye through and through.

For those of you inclined, please keep Steve and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

He is currently in critical care at the OSU Medical Center (i think). He was recently diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer and was receiving treatments. But due to other ailments & complications his condition has taken a drastic turn for the worse.

I'm sure his family would appreciate any prayers anyone could send his/their direction.

According to the announcers on CBS during the Big Ten Tournament Final, Steve is also a former Marine with two Purple Hearts.

From everything I have read and heard about the man, he is a person who exemplifies the qualities that I like to think of when I think of "a true Buckeye". Thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

Last week at this time things looked down-right desperate for Steve. And while his condition is still quite critical he's made it through the week where some doctors were very much questioning whether that was possible. There is even talk that they may try to take him off the ventilator and see how he responds, so that in and of itself is a mini miracle.

Quick side story:

Just around the same time that he was diagnosed with his cancer my Dad also found out that he had cancer found in a kidney. Through talking with some people that would know, we were told that the best possible doctor for the surgery would be one at the James Cancer Medical Center, Columbus (if he could get him...he was highly in demand of course). In hearing about my Dad's situation, Steve Snapp called him and said that if he had any trouble at all getting in with that particular doctor / hospital, let him know and he would do everything he could (talk to everyone he knew...and I'm sure he knows a lot of very influencial people).

Dad did get the doctor he wanted and scheduled the surgery in a timely manner. The surgery went well and Dad is doing great. We are praying like crazy for a similar end result for Steve.
