Workout offers OSU players a chance to make, amend impressions with NFL

For some Ohio State players, Friday represents a second chance. For others, it's their only chance.


Friday is the school's pro day, when coaches and scouts from most of the 32 NFL teams will convene at Woody Hayes Athletic Center to watch OSU's draft hopefuls work out.

Many of them will be coming to see if first-round prospects such as linebacker James Laurinaitis or cornerback Malcolm Jenkins can improve on some disappointing results in February at the NFL scouting combine.
While they're here, though, they will get a chance to peruse a number of lesser lights who were not invited to the combine.

"This is our combine, basically," quarterback Todd Boeckman said. "It's going to help that we have such a great draft class this year. All the scouts will come to see the high-profile guys, and they'll also catch other guys who are maybe flying under the radar."

The good news for Boeckman is that every year, several dozen players who weren't at the combine end up getting drafted. In the past 10 years, an average of 39 noncombine players have been selected, several as high as the second round.

In addition, a sizable number who go undrafted get signed to free-agent deals. You may have heard of some of those players: running back Willie Parker and linebacker James Harrison of the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, for example, both of whom were not at the combine and were not drafted.

So there's hope -- for Boeckman and defensive tackle Nader Abdallah, for tight end Rory Nicol, for fullback Brandon Smith, for offensive linemen Ben Person and Steve Rehring, for running back Maurice Wells.

Great 40 time for Beanie, as for MJ.......not so much. I think he will probably end up a safety in the NFL, unfortunately. I'm not knocking him at all, he has been a great (almost legendary) player at OSU. I know his technique is excellent, and maybe that will off set it. But remember........almost every receiver in the NFL has great technique, and most are under 4.5 in the 40.

my take on the situation is, whoever drafts Malcolm is going to realize quick in camp that he is corner even if they draft him as a safety. He's that good at CB. Listening to the analysts pick him apart for his 40 is a bit silly. He can play safety, but whoever drafts him will figure out where he should be pretty quickly....

Disagree. A 40 really isn't that big of a deal. He runs a 4.5. So what? He's not going to be a game changer in the sense Deion Sanders was, but he has so much else going for him. Experience(4 year starter at CB U says a lot), instincts, intelligence, size, toughness, and quickness. He ran one of the fastest shuttle times at the combine. He may get burned deep occasionally but so do a lot of corners.

Still a top 10 pick.

But, can the guy play football? I mean, seriously, can the guy play football?

Beanie is hands down the most athletic running back in this draft. If he slips out of the top ten, he will be considered a steal in my book. Can't wait to see he and some of the other guys silence the haters come draft day and the 2009 season.

This is considered a "fast track"? only beanie's times were markedly better than what was run at combine

Whats up with JL's 40? ran a 4.8 at combine and 4.72-4.78 at pro day? not good.....

I think the players miss Butch as speed coach....

They didn't run on the notoriously fast track. From the article...

He ran in the 4.7s at both events. He's an inside linebacker, that time is middle of the ground, not good not bad.

I think the players miss Butch as speed coach....

1) Butch Reynolds doesn't turn our wrs into Ginn, Gonzo & Holmes, nor produce Whitner or Hawk on D. There may be a slight difference in training, but there's a much more substantial difference in raw athleticism imo.

2) Hartline, Jenkins, Beanie, Washington and others tested well in other events (shuttle, broad jump, etc). Hartline was near the top of most non-40 events.
