I still don't understand why we don't just take a touchback on every kick.

My one concern is why we still cant cover kicks that well. With all the S,CB,LB types we have and a good coach like Hazell, you would think we could do a better job.

coach hazell is probably one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. I met him at football camp this summer and he just kept giving my pointers during the 7 on 7 drills and was always a big help. Im sure everyone at ohio state loves him, he has a bright future in my eyes, hopefully he will be Offensive Coordinator by the time i get to tOSU.

A-freaking-MEN! I've been puzzeled by this for 2 years now. What's the best case scenario? A 90 yard field for our opponent (instead of 80) on 1 out of every 10 kicks? Doesn't make sense to me. Give them an 80 yard field every time instead of a 60 yard field (or less) 30% of the time. Excellent point CleveBucks.

Are you guys saying that you don't think Nuge is trying for a touchback?
He puts some kicks thru the goal posts. Not every kick is going to be that deep.
I don't think he means to let them return the kicks.
It's not like punting. Unless you are referring to punting in which case disregard this post.

Zip ... Kickoffs. There was some discussion last season (when Luke Fickell was Special Teams coach) from the coaching staff about trying to pin opponents deep by using shortened kickoffs. This was part of their game plan strategy. So to answer your question, yes. No doubt that last season (and I believe this season as well) Nuge was asked to kick just deep enough to encourage a return that we could cover short of the 20.
Obviously, not every kick will be perfectly struck, but Nuge has the leg (even against the wind) to put the ball deep in the end zone on a vast majority of kicks. I am mystified as to why they would continue to try this tactic. The risk vs reward isn't great enough to justify doing it.

Yeah I think Nugent try's everytime to get it outta the endzone but well sometiems it just doesn't happen.... I think out coverage hasn't been horrible. I mean we haven't aloud one to be taken back yet so thats good. I mean we'll give them a return to the 40 or 50 which is unacceptable but Its better than allowing a TD. SO I think our coverage has been decent but not like you guys say it is.

nothing more devastating to a team than just giving up seven points, then fumbling the ensuing kickoff....
