Toledo?s 38-0 loss to Ohio State in Cleveland was, among being hilarious for BGSU fans, a most unlikely shutout. The Rockets hit the 50-point mark against a Big XII team the previous week. The Buckeyes? defense had trouble against Navy. Certainly, it was at least going to be a close game?

Not so. When the trendy upset prediction was looming, the Buckeyes tightened their grip on the gullet of Ohio football, choking any chance of a rebellion in the Buckeye State. It?s a story you?ve read so many times before; it?s almost second nature.

Ohio State has always had a stranglehold on this fair land. The last time they lost an in-state game was 1921 against the mighty Oberlin College Yeomen (That?s a fantastic team nickname, by the way). There may not be a more populous state in which one team reigned longer and stronger. Ohio has more bowl subdivision teams (eight) than any state except Texas (10). You?d think that, at some point in the past 88 years, one of them would have had a better day than the Buckeyes.

Maybe it?s simply hard luck. Since OSU schedules nonconference opponents well ahead of time (they already have a game with Tennessee in 2019), it?s also entirely possible they have some arcane knowledge of when in-state teams will be at their worst. Or it could be the snowball effect of desperation like the Chicago Cubs. Or perhaps the thrill of the chase clouds the ability to succeed like the Trix Rabbit.

But the ?Family Feud? most popular reason is probably that the game is almost always played in Columbus. Other than the Sept. 19 game against UT in Cleveland and against Cincinnati (at the Bengals? Paul Brown Stadium) in 2002, Ohio State has never traveled anywhere else in Ohio to play football since 1934 (Not like that matters. The entire state is their backyard.)

In the next five years, the Buckeyes will face at least six Ohio schools. Do any of them have a chance at breaking the streak?

I'm confident that Ohio State would have lost plenty of time throughout 81 years if they had an agreement with Cincinnati to play at each other's place every year as one of their rivalry OCC games, like South Carolina vs Clemson or Michigan vs Michigan State.

Ohio State has gotten away with playing most of them at home (their last game against Toledo was at Cleveland Browns Stadium) so they were not given a fair shake at the upset.

I wouldn't get cocky about that situation. Ohio State is fortunate about that situation. I think Ohio State needs to have some balls and start playing Cincinnati every season as a rivalry game. That could increase some kind of excitement in our season anyway. That will end Ohio State's streak sooner or later.

Perhaps no other team from Ohio will beat the Buckeyes in the next few years, but eventually it will happen. The state of Ohio is very talented and extremely tradition rich. It is just a matter of time before the right team from Ohio catches OSU in the right year. Just think if we had UC on the schedule this year, we could be in trouble.

Ohio State schedules Texas, USC, Miami and Oklahoma and now they need to get some balls. Right.

Cinci is doing OK under Brian Kelly. But how long is that going to last?

For a team to be a rival, they have to be at your level. As a program, Cinci isn't even in the discussion.

Cincinnati is 536-542-51 all time. Why in the hell would Ohio State gain anything from scheduling a crappy team every year that can't even win over half of its games? They have had 51 losing season compared to Ohio State's 15.

Get over it, it will take more than two years of being above average for Ohio State to even take a second glance at Cincinnati as an every year type of team.

Oh please, I've seen the Buckeyes outplayed by UC on more than one occasion, and Miami, BG and OU have been in a position where winning was a possibility. It's a matter of when, not if.

Blinded by recent success, are you? Since 1930, UC is just over .500 in 812 games, 402-389-21, good for 67th best - against middling competition. Conversely, since 1930, Ohio State is #1 at 600-198-26.

Since 1930, Cinci has been sub 500 30 or so times. Ohio State? 5 times.
Since 1930, Cinci has had 5 seasons of 1 win or less, Ohio State has had zero.

Balls?

It takes "balls" to play a team clearly your inferior, and who has been .500 for 80 years against suspect competition??

Please.... What kind of home field advantage is Cincy or Toledo or BGSU or Akron.. or Miami.. etc.. going to have in thier dinky little stadiums? "Oh no... 35,000 fans are yelling at me... whatever shall I do???"

The only advantage for them might be that the Buckeyes fall asleep and have a collective dream that they're back in High School stadiums.

Ohio State isn't "fortunate" Ohio State has made a concentrated effort to make Ohio State football king of football in the state. That wasn't luck, it was by design and with purpose.

Again with the "balls" How 'great' will this alleged rivalry be when Kelly takes a job at a better "football school" and UC goes from it's current success back to it's norm?

Cinci has a good team down there right now, and they should beat the "you're ducking us" drum... But, it's not "balls" or lack thereof that prevents a home and home with them. It's money. And don't fool yourself, it's not Ohio State's money concerns.... Nippert stadium seats 35,000. Assume they sell every seat at 60 bucks and they keep every single dollar of the revenue and Ohio State gets nothing (Not gonna happen). UC makes 2.1 million. Ohio Stadium, in contrast, seats 105,000 which at 60 bucks a ticket makes 6.3 million. Ohio State can give UC 67% (4.2 million) of the gate and Ohio State gets to keep as much as UC would make for it's 35,000 seat home game. Or, Ohio State can give them 33% of the gate, and UC does just as well as they would at home, money wise. Which scenario seems like the more realistic? Ohio State goes to Nippert and plays for free, or UC comes to the shoe for 33% of the gate?

UC should get some 'balls' and invest in college football like Ohio State has done for the last 100 or so years.

I always enjoy these threads with guys from Cinci who are Ohio State fans, but have this weird love for all things Cincinnati.

You guys can just save a lot of typing and just write either "I'm from Cinci" or "I went to UC".

Not to mention the fact that no matter what stadium you play the game at...if it's in Ohio, it'll be filled with Buckeyes. Just ask Indiana and NW...oh wait...those aren't even in Ohio.

Ohio teams have sometimes put a scare into Ohio State in recent years. Many play good football and Cincinnati is a very good football team this year.

But, with all due respect, when Kelly goes, and it will probably be at the end of this season, so will begin a decline to mediocrity in UC football.

Let's be honest. Ohio State is not lucky. The other Ohio universities are lucky that the state legislature puts pressure on Ohio State to play in-state schools. The money they earn playing in Ohio Stadium often means quite a bit to their athletics budgets. Ohio State would be much better off scheduling out-of-state schools.

from 1869 - 1922 Ohio State was 39th on the all time win list. Behind teams like Chicago, Sewanee, Tulsa, Yale and Princeton. Ohio State's W-L record, as an indicator of popularity, was only marginally better than Miami Ohio...

Ohio State did not hold any particular advantage in terms of athletes...
Ohio State did not have any particular advantage at all....

Except that they considered football more important.... for whatever reasons...
And, so.. what did Ohio State do that these other teams did not?

They invested in a huge stadium which was routinely vacant, and more than half vacant for the bulk of all home games, with crowds of 20,000 to 30,000 being the norm until after WWII.

If Cinci, or Miami or Toledo or anyone else in Ohio wants to bitch, they should bitch to their own history for failing to recognize the future of the game. They should bitch at their own history for seeing what Ohio State was doing, and failing to respond.

In 1922, all things we pretty much equal..... And Ohio State decided to use football as a way to make money.... and to gain exposure...other schools did not. tough [censored].
