1. this seems to only occur when the offense makes it past the line of scrimmage. but is it now standard operating procedure for the refs to spot the ball a full foot further than where the ball was located when the player was brought down? i noticed this a couple weeks ago. doesn't seem to matter who the refs are or what conference you watch, it seems to happen on every play. i originally thought they were being lazy, but it seems far to consistent for that. the only time this doesn't happen is when the player is stopped short of the los. in those situations the ball is generally spotted where it was when the player was brought down.

2. what do the color commentators do during the week that prevents them from learning the players names? do they write columns? do local tv/radio? kick puppies? you'd think these guys be more interested in sounding like... you know... not idiots. what if espin/abc or whoever just hired one of the local radio guys to sit beside them and give them info? i understand when its some obscure 3rd or 4th string guy getting mop up duty. but how can it take 20+ seconds to look up a starters name? they'd sound more respectable by pulling a bubbah and calling them by their numbers.

3. if we get rid of this crappy music played before/after tv timeouts can we switch back to the old clock rules?

4. why are there no cameras setup parallel to the goal line to give a proper look on whether or not the ball crossed the plane? all the cameras always seem to be at angles to the endzone.

5. why can't the refs request reviews of plays from the booth? ive seen too many occasions where refs have looked at each other clueless and then just guessed. im fine with them making some type of call. but they should request a review rather than hope the booth has time to look at every angle before the ball is snapped.

6. when penalties are called, why do refs throw the flag where the penalty occurred often directly at players? why not just have the booth determine the spot and the ref just drop the flag on the ground? i can't imagine it would add any time to the game since the booth is supposed to be reviewing every play anyway and penalties can't be overturned. it would at least give them something to do.

7. we need to teach our defenders how to sell the hold. ive never seen a team so effectively held (not called) in my life. for you would be refs out there. if the offensive player is behind the defensive player and has one or more of his arms wrapped around to the front of the defender and pulls said defender backwards and or to the ground... thats a hold. if an offensive player has a defensive player by his jersey at his shoulder pads while the defensive player is bent over attempting to move backwards and his jersey is being pulled beyond his helmet. that is a hold.

8. both illi and state penn wear white pants. tOSU wears gray. why are their pants less see through than ours?

9. why don't our cheerleaders wear outfits made of the same material that is used on our football teams pants?

edit: watching the texas tech vs. houston game. in reference to the big screen at some applebees the nascar guy just said, "you can see every detail in the video screen better than you can see with the naked eye". how is that possible? do you use bionic eyes or something? hook it directly to your brain maybe? oh and could someone please explain to him its "yards after contact" not "yards after missed tackles". can we just send him back to nascar?

Some more random thoughts:

1. Ohio State's schedule this year seems to be ideal for building a young NC-caliber team. The early loss to USC lowered expectations without compromising our chances for a BCS bowl game. Subsequent games against two weaker teams have helped the team build confidence for tougher games as the season ends.
2. Indiana is tougher than many folks here think. Unfortunately for them, they will probably play an away game against us again this year in their own stadium. They will give our offense a reality check, which our offense will pass.
3. PSU shows why teams should avoid cupcakes early in the season. Once they got behind, their belief in themselves seemed to evaporate. We've seen this pattern at Ohio State before. Come into a tough game the favorite, get off to an early lead that makes it look like the game could be a laugher, and then get beat in just about every phase of the game. Victories over weak opponents are like a drug, they rob you of your humility and obscure your weaknesses.
4. Washington's loss further drops our SOS by impacting on USC's power rating. It's not clear that Ohio State will move up on the computers very much, even with the losses above them.
5. I think it was Anderson Russell (couldn't see the number clearly on the small computer screen), but that first block after the Hines interception was a thing of beauty.
6. By year end, this team could be playing football at a level comparable to the best football in the country. A good bowl win could really set the stage for a NC next year.

Now that St. Francis of Gainsville (ESPiN: "Peace be upon his name") is out with a concussion, if he is out long enough for Florida to sustain a memorable loss, the BCS picture will be even more jumbled up. Oh, and what a humbling loss that was for the State Penn fans.

What a jumbled-up year this is for the BCS! The Buckeyes may be at a higher spot later on in the season.

Four top-ten teams lost this week. It will be interesting to see which (if any) of them fall behind #13 Ohio State....

That's the plan ... although don't count the Bucks out in 2009 just yet. With a defense like theirs, they can hang with any team in the country right now.

1. Uh ... no. He really is every bit that fat. Actually, you'd get a better idea of just how fat if you take an HD TV and play the regular signal through it to broaden out the pic from 4:3 to 16:9.
