Guiton vs Bauserman

I think that we should step back and consider ourselves lucky to have the problem where we debate who the backup QB is. How many times have you heard something to the effect of the backup QB being the most popular man in town.

Not that this discussion isn't interesting because it is... and I have my own opinions here too... but 'tis a far better discussion to be having in theory as opposed to having it for real.

And that's a bet that I'd lay 100000:1 on.

Wonder why there isn't a "trust the coaches" option here?

Long term KG may be a better fit for the offense. However, JB has had the meaningful reps and has now had the pressure of playing when we're under duress. JB is a safer play until something changes and when and if that happens the coaches will make that call.

Not enough data to determine that. He threw two passes. It wasn't pretty, but I would argue that the mistakes of our current starter before he had a lot more meaningful time weren't either. I think we're expecting a lot out of these guys to come in and fill the shoes of Pryor. In particular, we're expecting a lot out of them when the offense is devised around the starter. Ideally we shouldn't have a blend of pro-style and dual threat quarterbacks. That is just a nightmare to manage. That is another debate though and probably one worth having.

The offensive line was blocking horribly for a lot of the season and Todd didn't have the tools to compensate for that. That decision was easy. Yep, it was either put TP in or watch Boeckman get mauled for the rest of the season. That was also the last year that Bollman was the line coach. He was moved to OC the next fall.

If the argument for Bauserman over Guiton is that he's the safer bet, then Bauserman had better not turn the ball over.

The argument for Pryor is that he is a dynamic player and any mistakes he makes, however frustrating, can be dealt with because of what he does when he doesn't make the occasional mistake. Bauserman didn't show that he was safe last week, and he hasn't shown that he's able to make good decisions with the ball in his limited action. He also hasn't shown that he's able to make the offense better when he's out there.

If he's not a "game manager" that won't turn the ball over, and he's not actually helping the offense, then what's he doing?

Bollman still serves as the O-line coach and OC. He has done both for the entire Tressel era. I do believe Coach Hazell (who is the assistant head coach and wr coach) seemed to get more involved in play calling that year (or atleast it was first noticed that he was involved) which may have let Bollman focus more on the O-line. The offensive play calling is a joint effort between Tressel, Bollman and Hazell, there has never been just 1 guy calling the plays.

On the defensive side Heacock and Fickell are the Co-defensive coordinators, Heacock coaches the D-Line and Fickell the linebackers. Again the defensive play calls are a team effort.

I'm merely suggesting it isn't indicative of who he is and where he is as a quarterback. Obviously he isn't going to throw all of his incomplete passes to the guys in the other jerseys.

Either way, neither of these guys are going to see significant, meaningful playtime until Pryor goes down hard. At that point, we'll see how both of them do and we'll have the luxury of basing our opinions on something other than narrow observation and speculation.

If that's the best argument you can come up with, I think my point is valid.. when people take things way out of context, it generally means they don't have much else. Just my experiences talking here.

What has Bauserman shown that makes you guys so confident in him? There's a reason that a QB with 0 throws is dominating this poll. If one person can't get it done, time to let someone else try. Bauserman hasn't shown he's safe with the ball, no matter the sample size, hasn't shown that he's comfortable in the pocket. Just hasn't showed much of anything. I don't understand what the problem is.

There are a number of reasons why one player is dominating this poll. Here are 2.

1) No one here has seen Kenny Guiton play except in practice and a scrimmage.
2) Joe Bauserman hasn't played very well in the real games he's played in so far.

All this tells me is that there are a lot of people who are unhappy with Joe Bauserman's play, and that's human nature. It doesn't make Kenny Guiton better than Joe Bauserman, he just becomes door #2 since we dislike door #1.

In the end, Joe Bauserman is #2 because he is the better option right now. If Kenny Guiton was capable of running this offense he would have gotten more mop up duty to prepare him to do so in the event of Terrelle Pryor going down. He hasn't, which is indicative of 2 things.. Either:

1) Kenny Guiton is not ready for the challenge yet, either developmentally or physically, or
2) Joe Bauserman is just better than him

I'm afraid Joe Bauserman is #2 because he's a senior. Not because he's the better option. I can't buy the argument that he's safer with the ball. He's given us no reason to think he is.

Because it's not just that he's looked bad out there. He looks totally lost. It's not the right offense.

Surprised there's no option on this poll to put Jordan Hall in the old Shot-Ginn. That could give us a running formation of Hall at QB, Z Boren at FB, Herron at one TB, and Berry at the other TB. (Hyde can come in for Berry on short-yardage plays.)
