Best OSU Secondary
This is somewhat repetitive of another thread of mine, but I did not want it to get lost in the shuffle. I am interesteted in what everyone thinks about the topic.
Specifically, I note that OSU had four out of four DBs in 1979 who were all-conference first team (Bell, Guess and Skillings) or second team (Ellis). Is that the best OSU secondary ever (at least in that respect)? |

I believe the 68 secondary, everyone made an All American team. But teams didn't throw as much back then so one of the newer secondarys would get my vote but which one? Maybe the one with Shawn Springs?
1996 secondary Springs Howard Kelly Moore Berry That was a terrific defense(10.6 points a game) and they beat Arizona State and" Jake The Snake" in the Rose Bowl, finished ranked #2. http://www.cleveland.com/osu/index.s...efense_to.html Last edited by Taosman; 01-31-2013 at 04:28 PM. |

It's tough to pick a single best DB unit due to all the variables, (i.e. no real criteria, opponents, rest of defense, NFL careers, championships/team wins, etc.); however, my favorite team was the 1968 National Champions and their DBs were pretty good:
Jack Tatum Mike Sensibaugh Tim Anderson Ted Provost P.S. FWIW, here is a site that lists all the starters by year. http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/gra..._9records2.pdf Last edited by ScriptOhio; 02-01-2013 at 10:18 AM. |

That's the secondary I would have picked. But I was born in 1976 and wouldn't know much about the 1979 secondary. I'm sure 1968 was great, and I'm sure 1973 would have to be good, as well.
I remember how great it was to watch both corners (Springs and Howard) in 1996 totally shut down the opposing wide receivers (eff off, Tai Streets - you can eat my [Mark May] through a garden hose). Ohio State could blitz with linebackers, or with safeties.. I think I saw David Boston blitzing from the sidelines a couple times.

Best I've seen in my life was '96.
2007 was pretty damned good too.

That's the amazing thing: Winfield wasn't even a starter on that team.

Sophomore Kurt, Donald Washington, Anderson Russell. Perhaps if you advanced the careers of Coleman & Chekwa To their senior years and put Jenkins on that squad you might Have something. |

There was only one Jack Tatum so his squad wins.
Best in my lifetime was the 1998 team. Antoine Winfield and Ahmed Plummer at the corners with Damon Moore and "scary" Berry at the safties. Nate Clements was the nickel back. The 3 corners had great NFL careers (Plummers was cut short). The two safeties were drafted but also injured early iirc. 5 NFL players on the field at the same time gets my second place vote. |
