I read this over on BN. It will be interesting to follow. Will they "kiss and make up" or do you think Herby will be on the outside looking in? At the very least, with Geiger callin him out, it will be talk show fodder.

Geiger then had some words about Herbstreit, who has tried to walk the fence throughout this entire controversy.
“I understand one of the stars of ESPN Game Day went off on us and said we were bigger than college football,” Geiger said. “Three weeks ago, that same person said he didn’t see how he could recommend <!--Default NodeId For Ohio State is 687,2004-->Ohio State to any offensive high school football prospects. I am concerned about that and the juxtaposition about that.

“Our welcome mat is probably not as thick as it once was. I don’t know who is bigger than the game of football.”

It's getting taken out of context. Herbie was responding to a question about the ineffectiveness of our offense and he posed a question about it's effect on recruiting. He said that he didn't know that he could sell the program to a big time offensive recruit. I totally agree. I didn't see any problem with what he said, but there have been major twists on peoples words recently. All Buckeyes are up in arms.

That may be true. But, It appears Geiger/Tressel has intrepreted it in a negative way. Maybe they feel he should be more outspoken defending his alma mater. I haven't heard him on ESPN defending us at all. He has defended us to some extent on columbus radio. I just think he could have been WAY more outspoken defending us.

Herbie's concerned with his job at ESPN, not OSU. He's said more [censored] than what's been made public. Geiger has some reasoning behind some of his comments.

Herbstreit has gone out of his way to criticize OSU and some of it's personal to him. If he wants to become a broadcaster, he needs to stay neutral about this stuff and stay out of it.

I've known Herbstreit since he was at Centerville. He's always been a nice guy but he's also had a pretty big head.

You clowns need to get off Herbstreit's [censored]ing back. He's been as neutral as he possibly could be. Hey, if OSU is more important to you than your job, then why don't you just tell your boss that you're not coming in this week because it's the week before The Game? No? Thought so. Herbstreit has rarely picked against us in his game predictions...

I agree that Herby should consider his job 1st and his relationship with OSU second. ESPN is signing his check to be a commentator, not a homer for OSU. That said, I think Geiger is 100% correct in what he has said in regards to Herbstreit. Geiger is defending his institution, and is saying that anyone who messes with it, will not be welcomed with open arms. Geiger's handling of both the Obie situation and the MoC mess have shown,IMO, that he is more than willing to fess up when mistakes have been made, and is willing to clean house and take the blame, but that he is not going to take unjustified criticism from the media lying down. I kinda JT had more of an attitude about the media-open but confrontational-like Geiger does. Both Herbstreit and Geiger are doing their jobs-sometimes it will require them to cross swords.

stxbuck... I had an opportunity to chat with Geiger a couple years back... and I believe you hit it right on the head... from my long conversation with the man, I can see validity in everything in your posting... good job.... and I concur...

I agree with STX. Herbie also has given some [censored] for not bringing Gameday in, and the effect that might have on recruiting, and Geiger is [censored]ed about that also, but they both are looking out for their priorities...it's hard to take a side in this one.

Geiger is a man under fire right now and the university as a whole is very sensitive to anything being said in the media, with that said, I think he felt that Herbie crossed the line. I heard Herb's comments and I have to be honest, I thought it was borderline bull[censored] on his part, he stated in not so many words that he wouldnt recommend OSU to an offensive stud recruit and to me that is ridiculous in my opinion.

Yes, Coach Tressel is conservative, but it has been compounded this year by the inexperience of a o-line and quarterback(s).....do I think we should be labeled as not a place to go for offensive players? Absolutely not, Ohio State offers much more than how many times you throw the ball and stats. We win, and we win consistently.

My first thought when I heard Herb's comments that it was not something that should have been said by a former OSU qb, who by his accounts bleeds scarlet and gray. Also, keep in mind these comments were made before the MOC saga.

I just think the athletic department during this tough time, doesnt expect to be dragged through the fire by one of their own. Who knows how this will turn out but I hope Herb stays like he is and speaks his mind, because its his opinion and I value his opinion.

On the other hand, I see Mr. Geiger's point......an OSU alum bashing his football program....thats hard to swallow.

Bottom line, Herb is a buckeye and I hope they work this out, I am behind both men.

Geiger is working for the Buckeyes. Herbstreit is working for ESPN. That's the bottom line. Geiger calling out Herbstreit is calling out ESPN. Geiger is doing his job and standing up for the university, the Buckeyes and the coach.
Next year the Buckeyes will be a force and a top ten team. This is a rebuilding year and not a reloading year. The team had alot of holes to fill when 14 players were drafted by the NFL. A year of experience, learning from the mistakes and understanding the system will make a big difference next year.

I've been with Geigeron every subject except for his statement about Herbstreit. I don't think that you can fault Herbie at all, when it comes to this situation. Not only is he trying to stay neutral, by not defending tOSU, but he's simply calling things as he sees them. Herbie has taken off his scarlet colored glasses, for the sake of getting and keeping a very high profile job. We are allowed the luxury of sticking up for tOSU, even though we have as many "facts" to back our position, as Tom Friend does to back his. Herbstreit does not have that same luxury.

There's not a single thing that Herbie has said this year that I've thought he was out of line in saying. There have been some things, like the NCSt. prediction, that I have disagreed with, but never thought that he was just being "anti-tOSU" with his statements for the sake of appearing unbiased.

Stop asking Herbie to defend tOSU. He's not our champion in the national media. He's just another, very good, college football analyst.

I think Herbie works pretty hard at his job, and I agree that no one should be expecting him to be an OSU homer when he's not on 1460. He's obviously a huge supporter of OSU, but he's paid to make a reasoned analysis. Sometimes a reasoned analysis isn't what people want to hear, I guess. Truth can hurt. I too disagreed with his NCSt prediction, but I don't think his reasoning was bias or something.

Now, Mark May? He's nothing but his bias - at least in my mind. His critical analysis falls somewhere between nonexistant and wanting. Hell, at least Trev is now seemingly making an honest effort to up his skills in the broadcast game.
