Yeesh, it's just a number. It's not like he wears a jersey with the word "dumbass" across the back of it.

Yeah, I know. I retired that number.

You've been around here long enough to provide a link or source, even if it was read in the paper.

Why do you assume:
- the number cannot be earned back? That's not my understanding at all.
- that he doesn't need to earn his way back to those good graces, as things stand now?

I guess because it was not stated in anything I read that he could get it back. If he can, that would be great!!!
I assumed he could earn his way back to good graces - but IMHO it would be much better if he could get his old number back for the reasons mentioned - glad you might have info that he can!!
In any case - I am really pulling for Ray Small to be the receiver we all think he can be!

Reporters noticed that Small's number had been changed from the 4 he wore last season to number in the 80s. Small's practice participation was also limited. Hazell was asked if the switch in numbers was a disciplinary action.
"Just a little reminder. That's all it is," said Hazell, who then confirmed that Small's limited participation in practice was not a result of injury.
"Other decision," said Hazell when asked if Small's practice status was the result of a physical problem or some other decision.
"He's about three quarters of the way in. We'll probably get him a couple of reps tomorrow in the scrimmage," said Hazell.

Seems like the number switch may be beneficial in the long run for the punt return unit.
Last year when the return team came on the field, Kurt Coleman would be forced to leave the field because of wearing a duplicate number with Small.
Not a big deal but sure must alleviaate some personnel decisions and confusion for ST coaches.

True, it is just a number, and it is more of a a perception thing. While it is just my opinion, it seemed a bit uneceesary. To some their uniform number is important and serves as thier identy.
FWIW - it has been reported many times that some Professional athletes buy or offer to buy their old numbers from other players on their teams, or that college recruits try to get their old HS numbers. So I guess others may have the same "dumbass" opinion.
