Given some of the controversy over B10 calls the past couple of years, it will be interesting,I agree. Experiment is a good word. So long as it is inobtrustive and that reviews are made quickly, I have no problem with it. If it turns into an NFL cluster-you-know-what, then they should ditch it.

If you look at some of the major mistakes that have been corrected in NFL games it is tough to argue against it, but the NFL also has their share of problems making it work (particularly long delays). The Big Ten does not have the financial resources of the NFL. Can they put the technology in place to make it work properly? Not just for OSU-Michigan, but for IU-NU?

I'm not a huge fan of instant reply. I'd rather they put better officials on the field. To me it's still a game ... with all that that implies. There is a natural feeling to some inaccuracy, some human error. IMO the flaws and blemishes are what make college football such a great game. Our passions are fueled by the debate and uncertainty. Who really deserves to be National Champion? How would the season have changed if team "X" got a shot at playing team "Y"? What would have happened if this call or that call would have gone the other way? These are the issues that drive our passions all season long, not just on Saturdays in the fall. Hopefully the BigTen can make this work without being as intrusive as instant replay is in the NFL.
PS I can't wait to see JoPa's reaction the first time an instant replay ruling goes against his team. I guess he'll be running all the way to the league offices to "talk" to the official. |

Big Ten to use instant replay

I personally like the way the NFL currently does it i.e. limited challenges and auto reviews in the last 2 minutes of a half.
Only thing I would change is that you shouldn't lose a challenge if you are proven correct. Screw the length of the game, you should not be penalized for calling attention to officiating errors. I know PSU feels they get hosed every week, but I am having a hard time remembering a blatant bad call that cost OSU a game in quite sometime. Am I forgetting something glaringly obvious? MSU 1974 is the obvious one but I am drawing a blank after that(remember I said cost us a game-many bad calls in games we have won anyway). |
