College coach's salaries

I looked up a story in S.I. from last year on what Tress and what every other big name coach was getting paid, check it out...

For the amount of money that some of these football programs bring in to universities, that's a steal. But overall athetics cost a lot of money. The real question is. How much did Woody get paid?

Interesting. I didn't see anything in the bonus section about beating scUM or winning a NC. Didn't Cooper have those bonuses in his contract?

Maybe they figured since Tressel knows how to do these things, they'd better leave them out. They sure didn't have to pay many of those bonuses to Coop....

All I was able to find was his starting salary- $12,500/year in 1951. That translates to $91,315 in 2003 dollars.

How much did Woody get paid?

For a long time Woody insisted that his pay never exceed what the highest paid full professor with comparable seniority made. He also insisted on teaching two classes (I took his football course). It worked until the school let Fred Taylor go and discovered what Eldon Miller wanted (and what other basketball coaches were making). Woody stuck to his guns and I'm not sure how the B-ball salary issue was resolved.

It lists Miami(fl) as not available but reported Coker is at a little over a million... how does the university afford this? I was watching a game not too long ago that said Miami only had 14,000 students total. how many of those students are on scholarships? The university can't possibly be making that much money could it?

This is the only part of Tressell's contract that bugs me. I got paid less in one year by tOSU as an acadmic advisor than his per quarter bonus for 50% above 3.0. And as an honors advisor, I had about 75%-80% of my students achieving a 3.3 GPA or higher every quarter.

Why does the coach get the bonus for high GPAs and not the professors, advisors, and tutors who also help the student athletes? Then again, I never received any blame from the media for low GPAs either.

The Orange Bowl definitely ain't the 'Shoe, but I'm sure that Miami brings in enough gate (not to mention merchandising) to pay their coach over $1M.

And I believe Miami is private, so those 14K students are each paying more than OSU students.

I think the point is that Tressel wanted to tie academic achievement into his contract. IIRC, he wanted that to be more of a contract feature that actual football achievement. This (I believe) was to ensure that the message was sent "I'm hear to stive for excellence in all areas of a student athlete's development, not just of the field, but in the classroom and in life.

Why do profs/advisors/tutors not get extra compensation. I don't know, but I could see the potential for academic misconduct for the sole purpose of achieving a bonus being an issue. I think even the hint or possibility of impropriety needs to be eliminated in that regard.
