If those are numbers of a 10th round pick I'd like to see what kind of numbers a first rounder puts up.

BuckNutty: HS kids that get picked in the first round or two have stats that you'd think were made up, e.g., .550 batting average, 20+ HRs in 35 games, 9-0 pitching records w/15+ SOs per game, etc.

It looks like his chances as a high draft pick might go either way with his stats. If he isn't a first or second round pick, what kind of money is he looking at?

I don't know much about development of pitchers, but wouldn't he better off at tOSU to tone his skills instead of the minor leagues and go in a high round after a couple of years playing baseball at tOSU? '
I've seen minor league pitchers get knocked around like it's batting practice by the Big Leaguers in exhibition games.
I'm thinking it would be great if he played both sports at tOSU.

Major League and most college scouts don't pay any attention to high school stats. If you're a pitcher, they're looking at your control, what pitches you throw, how effective is your changeup, how much movement is on your fastball, etc. They could care less about your W-L record.

I read that Bauserman was hitting low-mid 90's on the gun in the last inning of a game. That alone will get him more looks than his stats. If he has a good curve he'll still go high.

Even most college scouts (or the good ones at least) won't offer a kid without putting them through their own personal workout. Anybody could hit .550 against weak high school competition.

Any kid with legitimate baseball ability, would be totally foolish to NOT take the money and go the Baseball route !

Hell, If you get a "hang-nail"..you can take a month or so off...and still get paid !!

Cleve has pretty much summed it up but scouts look for the upside potential. For example JB may be throwing in the low 90's with flawed mechanics...if he is put in a 100% baseball environment with quality coaching that could increase dramatically. As for hitters, a scout basically looks at bat speed, arm strength, speed over 60 yds and so forth. Most HS pitchers are basically throwers...the scouts look for the tools...they assume they can teach them to pitch

If JB has a good opportunity to make upper 5-digits or lower 6-digits in the minors (if they make that much) to start out, then I can see him going. Otherwise, he needs to keep his options open.

To add to Grad's comments, scouts also don't give a [censored] about a pitcher throwing a good curve. Ask any pitching coach in the minors (or majors) and they look for velocity, poise on the mound, and a change-up. Every minor league manager (or major league pitching coach) that I have heard speak or talked to have said that when it comes to a curve, they can teach that to a pitcher. The other things are a bit more difficult. This winter I had the pleasure of spending time with the Captains and Aeros pitching coaches (Farm teams for the Indians, A and AA respectively) and they really stressed that through high school, a pitcher only needs 5 pitches: high inside fastball, high outside fastball, low inside fastball, low outside fastball, and a change-up.

As for hitting, again I'm simply adding to Grad's comments, they tend to basically focus on bat speed and mechanics. There are many hs players that can bat 0.500 with a crappy upper-cut swing, but said player will not interest many scouts due to poor mechanics.

Bauserman lost his playoff game

FOREST 2, TALLAHASSEE LINCOLN 0. At Tallahassee, Forest starter Bobby Kennedy was dealing. So was his counterpart, Tallahassee Lincoln right-hander Joe Bauserman. But only Forest managed to play its cards right, and the payoff was a 2-0 road victory over the Trojans Tuesday night in a Region 4A-1 quarterfinal action.

Kennedy completed the four-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and three walks. The win improved his record to 6-4.

"That's the way he's supposed to pitch," Forest coach Wayne Yancey said. "He did a great job of keeping them off stride tonight. We didn't do a whole lot at the plate tonight, but fortunately we scored two."

In fact, the Wildcats managed just a pair of hits against Bauserman, a quarterback who has signed a football scholarship with Ohio State. Timely hitting, a pair of sacrifice bunts and a brief wild streak by Bauserman was the difference.

Forest struck for the game's first run in the third. After Jed Yancey doubled off the left field wall, Tyler Morgan's sacrifice bunt moved him to third. Two batters later, Daniel Adkins drove Yancey home with an RBI single to left.

The Wildcats scored a run without the benefit of a hit in the fifth. Yancey was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before a Bauserman throwing error and a walk loaded the bases. Nate Samson drove home the game's second run with a sacrifice fly to center.

Bauserman (5-3), who pitched six innings and struck out eight, fanned Adkins and coaxed Steve Hannen into a pop out to get out of the jam.

"He was tough," Kennedy said of Bauserman. "To beat a kid like that É I'm very pleased. We got a little bit of luck and a couple runs and we were able to take it."

I wish he had signed with us... maybe we'll get lucky and still get the kid...

Waiting on Draft

All Lincoln pitcher Joe Bauserman can do now is wait on the Major League amateur draft June7-8.

Baseball America projects Bauserman, a hard-throwing right-hander whose fastball has been clocked at 95mph, to go between the third and fifth rounds. Around 1,500 players will be selected.

Bauserman, the Trojans' starting quarterback the past two years, has an option to attend Ohio State in January and play football, but his goal is to play professional baseball.

"I don't really know what's going to happen (with the draft)," Bauserman said. "It's exciting but I am just kind of waiting to see what happens."

Lincoln baseball coach Joe Vallese was impressed by Bauserman's approach the past two seasons, especially when a caravan of professional scouts charted Bauserman's every move.

"Joe was very mature about it (attention), and the best part was he didn't make it a 'me' thing," said Vallese, who would leave the Trojans' pitching rotation on his telephone message machine for scouts and recruiters.

"Joe never was cocky or arrogant about it, and I never thought it affected the way he played. For a teenager, that's a lot of pressure, but Joe handled it very well."

I think they would but only if he was the right guy (i.e. Sanchez or possibly Christensen). IMO they will not "reach" for anyone if Bauserman comes to tOSU but if he goes to baseball, I think it then becomes essential to take a QB.
