I've had a lot of luck waiting until the week of the game, and calling the ticket office. Usually tickets are released game week for a lot of the lesser non-conference games, going on sale at face Thursday or Friday before the game. For the Big 10 it's a lot tougher, but I recall tickets being released this way for the 2007 Illinois game. Last year these last minute pairs and singles were released on hangonsloopy.com, but this year it's been exclusively on Ticketmaster. I think every home game we have played thus far, has had tickets available on Ticketmaster. If you're really feeling adventurous though, Ticketmaster will be selling Penn State, Purdue, AND Michigan on September 29th at 10:00 AM. For more info about this, see the Ticketmaster thread in the ticket forum.
As for getting them way in advance, that's harder. It's doable, but only through a ticket broker, or on Ebay. You'll get your tickets, and have more time to plan, but you pay a big premium for the convenience.
