Should College Athletes get paid? (Merged)
Is anyone watching this show on ESPiN? Two panels with so people for it and some people against it. John Thompson, former head coach at Georgetown has made some points against athletes being paid that are some of the most truthful statements I have ever heard. They have everyone from the president of the NCAA to an NFL agent on the panel, many of which are making points that would benefit themselves more than the student athletes they are discussing. Coach Thompson is making real life statements about real life situations that effect almost every student athlete in the country.

This Thompson said in front of Myles Brand that he had seen many cases where players had accepted money. I heard that brand wanted to know why he didn't report them and he got shifty.

That happened early in the show. It was pretty funny but it is the truth. It probably happened right under Brands nose while he was at Indiana. The commments I am talking about were just about a half way into the program. He shut everybody up including Bob Ley who is moderating for ESPiN.

Athletes do get paid: Full tuition, books, and a monthly living stipend if they don't line in the free dorms...not to mention team meals.

exactly mili......
ask the parents of any kids the age of 15-18 if they would be willing to accept a full ride for their children......99.9% would bow down and kiss your feet for doing so....
there is an enormous parental responsibility involved here....if the parents of athletes can't pony up 3k a year in spending money for their kid, they need to stop complaining....
most parents take out loans, get second jobs or get a second mortgage to put their kids through college FOR THE OPPORTUNITY IT PROVIDES THEM IN LIFE....
what has been a unique feature of American society is the willingness of the parents to sacrifice for the betterment of their children...

That is basically what Thompson said. Life is full of choices and choosing to go to school weather it be because of a sport or a degree is an individual decision. If someone wants to get paid they can get a job and live their life like everyone else instead of complaining about their free education, room and board, and even their monthly allowance provided by most large universities. I only wish I had the athletic ability of some of these kids. I went to a D-3 school to play baseball with no athletic scholarship at all. I did it because I wanted to play the game. I only lasted 1 year because my family couldn't afford another loan. Now I have a job and am able to do what I want when I want but I still think about baseball. These kids and the adults that are pushing for this forget or do not realize what they have in front of them.
The only point I do agree with is that athletes should get a FULL scholarship. I guess most scholarships only cover 90% of there fees.

I'm pretty sure that most athletic scholarships (i.e. football scholarships) cover tuition and room & board. The only expenses left unpaid are books and personal expenses (extra food, etc.).
