HOT SPRINGS, Va. - Florida State may not be at full strength against Miami on Sept. 5, but the Seminoles' linebackers will be, according to Coach Bobby Bowden.

He said LBs Ernie Sims and A.J. Nicholson will play against the Hurricanes. Sims (domestic battery and resisting arrest) and Nicholson (DUI, resisting arrest) were charged with misdemeanors over the summer. Nicholson's charges came in separate arrests.

"If it's a felony it's already decided -- you can't play. If it's a misdemeanor it's in my hands," Bowden said Monday during the annual ACC football preseason media gathering.

"Yeah, oh yeah they'll play. There's more ways to discipline than a dadgum suspension.

"Now to say that we don't discipline just because I don't suspend them so I can be like everybody else? … I'm going to handle our problems. There's more than one way to skin a cat."

FAT CHANCE: Miami coach Larry Coker has kept a close eye on junior TB Tyrone Moss' physique since spring practice ended, and he likes what he has seen -- so far.

But Coker isn't going to be patient with the weight problems that plagued Moss last year. Miami needs productivity in its running game to relieve pressure from first-year starting QB Kyle Wright.

"I'm not going to go through another season with an overweight, sluggish running back," Coker said. "I did that last year, and I'm not going to do it again."

RAISING THE BAR: Bowden initially withheld a pay raise from his offensive assistants last spring. Punishment for an unproductive season that included the lowest point total at FSU in 23 years, right?

Not quite.

"We took care of defense's first this year because we felt like they were more deserving," Bowden said. "But it wasn't as a punishment."

Bowden said he eventually went back and raised the salary of his offensive staff, including his son, offensive coordinator Jeff Bowden.

Doug Carlson

Imagine if Tressel said,
"Yeah, oh yeah they'll play. There's more ways to discipline than a dadgum suspension.

"Now to say that we don't discipline just because I don't suspend them so I can be like everybody else? … I'm going to handle our problems. There's more than one way to skin a cat."

Now imagine Tressel saying that in a southern draw... (pause for imagination sequence)... Goes down a lot easier, eh? Makes me feel warm on the inside, too... Yeah, this article clearly shows Bowden has a hard-on for punishing his players who break the law...

Misanthrope could go either way
Gee, what a surprise.

We suspend guys left and right and yet JT gets villified in some circles, while good ol' boy Bobby gets the love for using wind sprints as his sole source of punishment.

I could just see the ESPN lead in now, if Tressel made such a statement.

Having said that, however, there are plenty of Buckeye "fans" who would love JT to handle things the Bowden way. I swear Troy Smith could get caught with a corpse in his house and blood on his hands, and the biggest concern some folks would have is whether he could get out on bail for the Texas game.

The best quote comes from another article linked in the Police/Legal Blotter thread.

Quote:
"We've always had somebody in trouble, somebody with grades," Bowden said. "That's life. It's the way it is."
Thats quite a way to look at things. Can you imagine if JT said this? I know we shouldn't throw stones from our very fragile glass house but common.

Nice to see Bowden* still decides "not to punish the team" by keeping star players from playing. Of course, the media likes his "Aw, shucks" schtick, so Bowden* really doesn't get questioned much like any other coach in the country would. Oh well, I just keep hoping he will go away...unfortunately, he never does.
