NCAA puts ban on Indian mascots in postseason events
OOPS! Didn't see the thread in Open Discussion.
So... no Seminoles in bowl games?

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The NCAA banned the use of American Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason tournaments, but will not prohibit them otherwise.
The NCAA's executive committee decided this week the organization did not have the authority to bar Indian mascots by individual schools, committee chairman Walter Harrison said Friday.
Nicknames or mascots deemed "hostile or abusive" would not be allowed by teams on their uniforms or other clothing beginning with any NCAA tournament after Feb. 1, said Harrison, the University of Hartford's president.
"What each institution decides to do is really its own business" outside NCAA championship events, he said.
Guidelines were not immediately available on which logos and nicknames would be considered "hostile or abusive."
The NCAA two years ago recommended that schools determine for themselves whether the Indian depictions were offensive.
Among the schools to change nicknames in recent years over such concerns were St. John's (from Redmen to Red Storm) and Marquette (from Warriors to Golden Eagles).
The NCAA plans to ban schools using Indian nicknames from hosting postseason events. Harrison said schools with such mascots that have already been selected as tournament sites would be asked to cover any offensive logos.
Such logos also would be prohibited at postseason games on cheerleader and band uniforms starting in 2008.

I wonder what the actuall natives think, for instance Florida State is very active with the Seminole Nation. They donate large amount of money and work hand in hand with them on many projects. I have a hard time believing that they feel that FSU is degrading them.

More than a few tribes feel it's an honor to be the representative of a university. Are we disrespecting our state tree by using its nuts as a mascot?
Now, if the NCAA wants some truly offensive team names:
Tulsa Trailer Trash
Raleigh Rednecks
Houston Hillbillies
Nashville [censored]s
Pittsburgh Porch Monkeys
Waco Wetbacks
Rio Rivercrossers
Chico Cholos
San Diego Slanteyes
California Chinks

I don't have a problem with Native American mascots, so long as it's done tastefully and respectfully - and as mentioned, in PARTNERSHIP with the group that is being "honored". I do have a problem with derogatory terminology being used as mascots, such as "Redskins".
And since I know some jackass is gonna ask... Yes I'd have a problem with "Whiteboys" or "Honkies" or "Rednecks" as a mascot too.

It trumps all things because it's the Ohio State-M*ch*g*n game. And I would like to think our guys understand that, but there's only one demonstration of understanding that and that's at 12:00 noon on Saturday.

That's a crock, and he knows it. What the hell are they going to do, have 2 nicknames?
More than one tribe has politely told the NCAA to mind their own business - if the tribe is offended, they'll let the school know about it. But nooooooo, the cultural busy-bodies at the NCAA decided they needed to make a blanket decision, because "we the people" are too stupid to make them ourselves.
Another reminder of why I love the games but hate the system...

They're not banning nicknames, they're banning the the mascots - the costumed people who dance around and make asses of themselves. Some places do it tastefully, others border on minstrelsy. I think this is a good move.

No, they're banning anything about the nickname on uniforms or equipment, not just the mascots.
