Tough times at Penn State
I was just cruising through some articles at collegefootballnews.com and came across yet another article regarding a Penn State football player having problems. Lavon Chisely, a fifth year senior who was expected to be the top backup for the DL this year, has just been declared academically ineligible making his loss the second crucial personnel loss on defense in the last week alone.
Also noted at the bottom of the article was a small blurb on how starting wideout Mark Rubin recently had surgery on his ankle and will also be sidelined for the year. His loss, plus the expected suspensions of receiver Jim Kanuch and safety Nolan McCready (who were also involved in the ridiculous harassment of an ex-PSU coach along with Dan Connor) makes this week an extremely bad one for PSU and may act as a bit of a distraction as the team prepares for the opening of the season which is only two weeks away.
What exactly is happening to the program there in Happy Valley? And why isn't ESPN all over each and every one of these stories like they would be if OSU lost three players to suspension, one to grades, and a fifth to injury all in the same week? Most importantly, how might all of these problems affect their performance on the field and should we actually consider PSU a threat to win a few games in the Big Ten this year?

Penn State has been irrelevant in college football for years now. Nobody outside the greater Happy Valley area cares.

Actually, the few times it is relevant (like when they play OSU)... or they show up on sportscenter, they are described as a has been football team. People have respect for joepa and don't rip into him as much, but its no big secret that PSU stinks right now.

Bruce Feldman noted much of the problems at PSU in his blog yesterday. He pointed out that, ironically, in the ESPN college preview issue there is a photo spread featuring Dan Connor, and on the facing page is an advertisement from Verizon for specialized ring tones to identify annoying incoming calls.

Still think they're dangerous?
