Thank you so much for detailing that - my cousin who's a referee didn't believe me. I was watching that game last year and saw it happen, and was trying to tell him about it afterwards. He thought I was nuts, and said there was no such thing as a 1 pt safety. I copied and pasted that text into an email and sent it to him with a great big "HA!"

Yeah, that's where I saw it. I thought it was a Texas game, but couldn't remember which one.

Yertle, I think you've only learned half of what you thought you learned.
Mike Tirico said last week that the ground can cause a fumble. And since that was said on ESPN, I'm still on topic with the thread name.
I've always hated that "ground can't cause a fumble" line. If a guy is carrying the ball loose, and the ball contacts the ground without him being down, the ground 'caused' a legit fumble. Now when guys go to the ground with the ball in a normal tucked position, the elbow hitting the ground ends the play before the ball is jarred loose. But if the ball-carrier isn't falling due to contact, and the ball hits the ground before the elbow, shoulder, hip, ass, back, helmet, or knee...that's a fumble, and the ground 'caused' it. Based on my understanding of college rules.

Dammit!!! My brain is screwing me again!
Well, I still say Huston gets a safety this weekend.

Have you been reading my ECIV 110 exam?
(Yes, I seriously wrote that on an exam my 2nd year of college.)
And BB73, isn't that what happened to what's-his-name for what's-their-team (maybe Arkansas?) back in '98, when they should have beated Tennessee for the SEC championship? They're up by 3 or 4 or so, they're running the clock out. Basically, all they need is another first down, and Ohio State is going to the first BCS national title game vs. Florida State. The QB fades back, stumbles, uses the hand that has the ball in it to brace himself, and regains his balance. Unfortunately, the ground caused the fumble, Tennessee got the ball, and later scored a touchdown to win the game.

Clint Stoerner was the QB that stumbled and lost the ball for Arkansas, when they were close to running the clock out against the Vols. I'm not sure if the ball or his hand hit the ground, although he was definitely untouched by a defender. And it wasn't the SEC championship game, it was a mid-November game. Mississippi St. actually made the SEC championship game in 1998.

Who gets the ball after the 1 pt safety? Is it just treated like the extra point was a success?
