I watched Sanchez's press conference. He declared that he was coming out, and that he'd always be a Trojan, loved the time with his teammates, and that he would always "Fight on". Pretty much everything you'd expect him to say.
Then Pete Carroll came to the microphones, and all I can say is "Wow!". Pete clearly disagreed with the decision. He said that Sanchez was going 'against the grain', and things like he wouldn't be taking advantage of all the opportunities at USC, and that the NFL only has film of 16 starts for him, and that half the QBs that come out early aren't successful in the NFL. Pete said that players considering the NFL go through a process at USC, and that Sanchez was 'hammered' with information during the process. Pete also said he felt like he was a father to Sanchez. FYI, Mark isn't really leaving college early, he will have his degree before he plays in the NFL (he's been there for 4 years, the first of which was a redshirt). I was stunned at how negative Carroll was, just moments after Sanchez announced his decision - what should be a joyous occasion for the Sanchez family had USC's coach throwing cold water on the proceedings. It was basically "good luck, but you're making a mistake". In my opinion, that was a classless move by Carroll, and it appeared to me that Pete is really interested in having players stay at USC for the good of USC and Carroll, not in making the decision that's best for them. |

and has done so with a lot of late first round guys too, guys who will take an entire career to match the guaranteed money in Sanchez' rookie contract.

I didn't see the press conference, but BB73's comments as well as the comments from SC fans that Jwins quoted say enough. With that being said, it seems pretty uncharacteristic from what we usually see from Carroll. At USC, of all places, you'd think he'd have the "next in line, step up" mentality in this situation as he has in years past.
What I'm trying to figure out is how much, or what percentage of his statements derive from: 1. His actual concern for the well-being of Mark Sanchez's future 2. His concern that a new starting QB next season makes them more likely to drop an extra game or two, knocking them out of the title hunt yet another year (like BB73 said) 3. The fact that the last "All-Everything", can't-miss QB prospect out of USC (one of the first QB recruits on his watch, if I'm not mistaken) was handed a clipboard in favor of gray-bearded Kurt Warner, and another USC QB not living up to expectations in the NFL would somehow tarnish the image of what he has going on at USC. Just thinking out loud here. Well not out loud, but you know what I mean. It just seems for him to react this way, there has to be an underlying reason. I'm not familiar enough with Carroll to know what the most likely reason would be. Like I said, he usually just throws the next 5* kid in there and they don't really see much of a drop off. I'm surprised to see that from him today. |

Seriously, could you see Jim Tressel behaving like that at a press conference for any of his kids? Mack Brown? Bob Stoops? Pretty much anybody other than maybe Charlie Weis? Congrats Petey, you just got yourself compared to Charlie Weis in my mind. Ouch.

Hmm. Even if he thought that, I don't think JT would say it in public, especially at the press conference announcing the decision. Will he say it about Donald Washington? There is more reason to say it there than at a Press Conference for Sanchez. I doubt he does though.

What a classless guy. The kid is so happy about going into the NFL and for Carroll to say the things that he said about Sanchez's decision shows no class whatsoever.
I wonder what he said to OJ Mayo |
