I hope 5-star recruits considering USC were watching the press conference today. That's a heck of a black eye for USC recruiting if recruits think they're going to have to put up with what Sanchez did today should they decide to leave USC early for the NFL.

As long as USC continues to put people in the NFL, I doubt they give a crap.

I'm still not sure how anyone, including Pete or any USC fans, can say that this kid is making a mistake.
If he works out for the Lions and works out well he could be the number one overall pick in the draft. The Lions are going to take a QB, now the only question is whether or not they will take Stafford or Sanchez. Am I missing something here? The kid is going to be a first rounder no matter what now that Bradford is coming back, right? So where is this mistake? Pete Carroll is a [censored]ing dick for doing that to the kid. And what, exactly, does Pete Carroll know about coaching and evaluating talent in the NFL? He was a [censored]ing failure in the NFL. He's worried about the fact that now his team won't be playing for a NC next year?? Hey Pete, beat [censored]ing Oregon St. and Stanford and then worry about playing for NCs!!! We know you can win the big game, now win the little game. What a [censored]ing asshole. What an unbelievably spoiled rotten brat Carroll sounds like. You have to be kidding me!!!!!! The biggest day in the kid's life and you come out and basically say he's making a bad decision. Nice. Dickhead. |

Even if Carroll is right about the statistics (and I don't doubt the stats he seems to be alluding to), I don't see any practical reason for him to be expounding at such length on the topic. I'm sure he and Mark discussed in private previously, so is this some kind of of public service announcement? What value can there be in so openly second-guessing your (now former) star player?

If only Matt Cassel had gotten more meaningful snaps in college and had time to work on some things then he might be having a better pro career.
Oh, wait... |

PMS Interview with Pete Carroll
- I love the gracious snippet they played of Petey's reaction Mark's decision. - Listening to this host makes me almost like Hooley in comparison, he's that bad. Almost. - Petey was asked whether there was any info that would make him think it was time for Mark to leave, and his answer was basically "not necessarily." Being #1 at his position isn't enough if QBs aren't highly regarded enough. - Will not try to change Mark's mind. The only thing that would change it would be bad feedback from the league over the next 72 hours. - Didn't feel he needed to sugarcoat anything. He wanted to see what they could learn from this decision, maybe it will turn out to be the right one. He didn't want folks to think this was all hunky dory, he wanted to make it clear there's another way to approach this for other players. Excellent Pete Carroll interview on PMS - WeAreSC Forums Quote:

Not to defend Pete, but I thought his tone was a bit "educational". I see what people are saying in regards to it being inappropriate for that audience, but he does have a different perspective, having been on both sides of these types of equations, than many other coaches.
I doubt he takes much of a hit from this, as he's seen as a candid, shoot from the hip, kind of guy. That's probably all this will end up being seen as. |

Pete Carroll - News
Pete's conduct here has become indefensible. It's one thing to disagree with Sanchez's decision behind closed doors, trying to convince him to come back. It's entirely another thing to rip him on the way out after he's made his decision. He says that he is acting in Mark's best interests. But he's wrong here. If he truly believes he would have been better served coming back for another year, he "was" acting in his best interests by trying to convince him to come back. Now, there's no way to say that's he's doing anything for Mark Sanchez. All he's doing now is hurting Sanchez. And I must say that I find it a little strange that the draft evaluation for Sanchez came back second round - when I haven't seen anything else indicate that he's a second-rounder. Either one of three things are happening there: 1) Pete's lying; 2) The evaluation was pre-Rose Bowl, and Pete was spinning it to make it sound as if the Rose Bowl meant nothing for his draft status; or 3) Someone connected to the USC program was responsible for putting together the evaluation. Because he's no second-rounder... unless of course Pete continues to tear him down enough to the GMs out there. |
