Am I wrong or is all of this speculation because he said "I won't interview for any jobs" and not "I will be at USC next year"?
Carroll has a good thing going at USC...huge media market without an NFL franchise that has really latched onto these guys, he'd be nuts to go...not to say that NFL money can't make someone a little nuts ![]() |

Word on the Dan Patrick Show is that Pete's just putting out the feelers so that he gets a Weiss-like deal. He doesn't (or shouldn't) want to leave SC, he just wants the 10 year deal.

This reminds me I need to start Christmas shopping.

Didn't Pete already get his shirt handed to him once by the NFL?

Let's go back and check all of Nick Saban's public statements last year. I'm sure they included lots of "I'm happy at LSU" type stuff. There are some guys who would never consider leaving college but those are rare. I think Carroll would go back if the right deal came along. After all, who wouldn't want the opportunity to coach in the Super Bowl? Especially if the person in question believes he can do it. And PC believes it, I'm sure.

He would be a fool to go back, he's got some serious $ and a fairly decent win streak going. The only upside to him leaving would be if he won the national championship and left he'd be a legend at USC forever. I wouldnt mind seeing him go either as a buckeye fan.

I have heard three people in good jobs say, "I will not interview..." All of them soon took other jobs that they were offered without interviews.
Spurrier left and got burned. Petey has his own NFL history. So, probably not likely but this is a good way to throw up some smoke and test the waters. If it doesn't work to go to the NFL, you probably get a better pay offer at USC. Let's face it, from where he is, it is likely to be downhill for a while. He has had a phenomenal run and deserves recognition for it. |

Wasn't LSU a great place to coach? What incentive did Nick Saban have to leave there and go coach a dreadful Miami team?
It's called the lure of a new challenge. Doing something you've never done before. Climbing to the summit of the football world. And that summit, my friends, is the Super Bowl. I could be wrong. Maybe PC will be happy forever at USC. But I think he'll be like Saban and leave for the lure of the NFL. There will be several opportunities in the off-season and he will be a good candidate for all of them. Maybe not this year, but sooner or later he'll be in the NFL. |

ESPN Article:
The Trojans are 12-0 this season and haven't lost a game since Sept. 27, 2003. Since Oct. 6, 2002, USC is 45-1. In those 45 victories, only five were decided by less than a touchdown. As a college head coach, Carroll is 42-9 (all at USC). Do those numbers add up or is it just me? How can USC be 45-1 if Carroll is 42-9?? |

If Carroll gets offered an NFL job, he'll take it. The salary discrepancy between NFL Head coaches and College Head Coaches is so drastic that its too much money to pass down .. It has nothing to do with coaching in the Super Bowl, or new challenges, or media acclaim, or power, or control .. its all about the Benjamins. That's why Spurrier bolted his dream job in Florida, why Bill Parcells/Joe Gibbs/Dick Vermeil came out of retirement, and why Nick Saban left LSU .. they're throwing boatloads of money at head coaches right now. Its too much money to turn down. The most a college coach is going to get paid is $2 million a year. In the NFL, the top coaches get paid in the realm of $6 million plus per season. $2m may be a heap of money, but its a big difference from the salary in the pros. If Carroll's smart, he'll stay at USC. He's a rich man already, and will make a great salary for the rest of his career. Money is one thing, but if you already have it, there's no need to derail a certain HOF college coaching career for "more money." |
