Leaf takes coaching job on West Texas A &M staff
NFL bust Ryan Leaf returned to football far from the spotlight yesterday in Canyon, Texas, joining Don Carthel’s West Texas A &M staff as quarterbacks coach.
Leaf, a former Washington State standout who was drafted second overall by the San Diego Chargers in 1998, spent five seasons in the NFL. His career was plagued by injuries and interceptions, along with numerous off-the-field problems.
After winning seven games in the four previous seasons, the Division II Buffaloes were 10-2 last season in Carthel’s first year. Leaf takes over for Wes Phillips, who left along with offensive coordinator Lee Hays to take the same positions at Baylor.

He'll be able to teach all those quarterbacks at West Texas A&M how to take a buttload of physical talent to get a huge contract, and then tank within minutes of signing on the dotted line. Too bad West Texas A&M doesn't really have that many players with a buttload of physical talent, what's he going to teach them now.

Maybe he can find the quarterback version of ex-Buffalo Chaun Thompson.

Dare we hope?
Maybe he has grown up finally? Certainly I would be hard pressed to come up with a player who has squandered more natural talent than he has. That being said perhaps his football life story would be a valuable warning to any college athletes who may have a professional fu future.

West Texas A&M's QB, Dalton Bell, threw for 345 yards per game and 30 TD's last season as a Jr. and is expected to have some slight NFL draft prospects. I am sure he is thrilled to know that NFL scouts will now give him the stigma that he was coached by Ryan Leaf of all people, arguably one of the biggest pro busts of all time.
