All I'll say is that it wasn't Paterno killing recruiting, it was Fran Gantner. I know, I've heard all the stories about opposing coaches saying "he'll be dead before you graduate", and all that, but quite frankly pointing to the offense and saying "Do you really want to play in THAT system?" was much more effective. Jury is out on Galen Hall, but if he opens the offense up, recruiting will be better, whether Paterno is the head coach or not. Plus, they won't replace Paterno with Gantner, which is another plus.
As for all the name-calling, well, I'll just say everyone should hope they can look back on their life and say they have made as much of a difference as he has.

We can disagree Buckeye737, no problems here. I understand if PennState needs to replace him ... I would understand their rationale. I just think JoePa has given EVERYTHING to PSU. They are what they are because of him. PSU will be a "plum" job when he retires, and that will be relatively soon (it almost has to be). I actually have more respect for Penn State for doing the "right" thing and keeping JoPa. It may not be the pragmatic thing to do, but it is the right thing IMO.

Extension could also be PSU's Golden Parachute for JP...if he decides to part company.

JoePa time is ticking away...tick...tick...tick...
well JoePa has done alot for Penn State but the question is this:
Is he hurting the program by staying on to long? Sometimes change is good, ask the buckeye fans.....I have the ultimate respect for you JoePa but its time to move on, you have won enough games and impacted enough lifes.
That extension is nothing, he will be gone in two years. It will probably help OSU in Pa.

If I was a recruit, and a big reason for going to PSU was Joe Pa. I wouldn't go... I doubt he coaches through the five years... Doesn't he turn 80 this year? I doubt he will couch when he is 85-86 (a lot of folks are dead at that age...)

I agree with you that it is classy of PSU to stick it out with JoePa. Loyalty doesn't seem to mean much in sports, but PSU is being VERY loyal.
By the way, I can't believe the way you butchered my original post. If I didn't know any better, I'd think I was on bucknuts. Just kidding, I don't think it was changed much at all.

yeah... shouldn't he be spending time with his grandchildren or something?
the really sad thing is that i think he is scared to retire because he has been coaching for so long that he doesn't know how to do anything else...
kinda like that guy in the Shawshank Redemption who killed himself after he got out... coaching is the only thing that Joepa knows... but it looks like he's been forgetting quite a bit...
