Hey, believe what you want to believe. I'm not expressly condemning the PSU program here by any means, but I do think JoePa often gets unfair passes as a result of some aura that he seems to have developed somewhere along the line. His support of the women's basketball coach at PSU (who he hired in the first place) that was apparently screening out gay players during the recruitment process and making public and private homophobic comments ( Women's Hoops Blog), his questionable comments about the A.J. Nicholson rape case ( College Football: Joe Paterno's Slip Of Tongue (Ugh)), the rash of PSU arrests of late (but he made them clean the stadium!), the nepotism that is JayPa, and the rumors I've heard from those that I trust about PSU's negative recruiting tactics are enough to make me believe JoePa wouldn't be above putting recruits' concerns to rest by telling them someone on the staff is going to take over even when no such plan is yet in place. I mean, again, if that were the case, it would be a win-win situation to just go ahead and announce his replacement publicly like FSU did with Jimbo Fisher.

Turning the program over to a long-time assistant never works, so I hope they do give it to Bradley.

I have no doubt JoePa 100% believes what he is telling the recruits.
That doesn't mean the administration will stick to it once they push him kicking and screaming out the back door.

And this is exactly what I think. JoePa shows all the signs of someone who believes PSU football is his program, and that the administration owes him. I mean, this is a guy that would have a three year extension right now if it was up to him. Now, we could probably debate whether he actually is owed something and/or should be allowed to leave on his own terms all day until we're blue in the face, but my opinion--JUST SPECULATING HERE--is that JoePa may well believe he's going to get to pick his successor. Either way, if there isn't a successor in place, I think it's wrong to be telling recruits anything to the contrary. Again, if a successor from the staff had been decided upon, I can't think of a single reason to keep that decision private as opposed to announcing it publicly and reaping all the benefits of stability.

Since the 3 very disappointing years to end the 1990's, Penn State's national standing {ie wins and losses} versus those thought of as "college football mediocrity" {think Purdue} is as follows:
Penn State: 55 wins, 42 losses
Ohio State: 81-20 {including 6-2 vs. PSU}
Michigan 73-27 {6-0 vs. PSU}
Iowa 60-39
Purdue 58-42 {last Rose Bowl 2000 season}
South Carolina 54-42
Arkansas 58-42
Texas Tech 65-37 {unbelievable}
Texas A&M 53-44
Maryland 61-37 {just pathetic on so many levels}
BC 71-30 {8 straight bowl wins, higher grad rate too}
Virginia 57-43 {Huh?}
Arizona St. 56-43
Oregon St 63-36
UCLA 56-43
Pitt 55-42 {oh good lord, Joe. What have you done?}
Cincinnati 55-44 {stop the nonsense, Graham. Please}
Something happened to the PSU Staff in 2000, but I can't remember.
So all Happy Jacks and JoePa/Spud jock sniffers: Look at this list full of college football has-beens/crap programs and see where PSU stands since our recruits were in 4th grade.
I love Penn State, not Joe Paterno.

This whole millenium has been one big disappointment after another, except 2005.
2002, 2006, 2007 : lost to every decent team we played.
2000, 2001, 2003, 2004 : PSU power. Lost to everyone.
2005 : hillbilly from Bellefonte won the Powerball.
2008: The madness must end.
I mean look at that list, and think of our recruits ages' during those years. None of our recruits remember PSU football, except 2005, b/c they were in diapers. Rose bowl in 1994. The recruits hadn't hit pre-school.
