Since Charlie Weis' 2005 team almost staged an upset for the ages against USC, Notre Dame has failed to earn a signature win.

I still can't believe that people/media still consider that to be Charlie's greatest victory. Somewhere, this is all Ty Willingham's fault.

Tremendous strategy in this game. Schedule a win, set it in a venue across the country in the premiere state for talent, and hand out endless free tickets to unofficial visitors. There are limits for official visits, but those do not apply to recruits who just drive over for the game and want free admission only.

No way ND gets any serious phone-time with Stoops or Ferentz -- and that is probably mutual. It's a two-horse race, either Harbaugh or Kelly, and I would think Harbaugh wants to keep his options open for the Michigan job next year.

Harbaugh may be a target

Eric Hansen of the South Bend Tribune offers a handy-dandy primer on things to keep an eye on as the Charlie Weis Era seemingly comes to a close. In it, he reports that Stanford's Jim Harbaugh is a name that he is hearing will be on the Irish's list. To which we say: Remember what happened the last time Notre Dame hired a Stanford coach who'd had one good season on The Farm?

Hansen writes that the size of Weis's buyout won't be a factor in deciding to fire him; Notre Dame's winning the last two games of the season won't matter; and a whether the school becomes bowl eligible or not also is of no concern.

Perhaps the biggest sign that a change is imminent: Hansen writes that Notre Dame has blocked the university plane from appearing on flightaware.com, a flight-tracking website, presumably so fans can't see where it flies to pick up candidates for interviews.

Stoops to ... South Bend?

Brian Hanley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that a source has told him that Oklahoma's Bob Stoops and Iowa's Kirk Ferentz will be on athletic director Jack Swarbrick's list of candidates to replace Charlie Weis -- assuming Swarbrick fires Weis.

Moreover, the source said that Stoops has told confidants that he would be interested in taking over the Irish.

Stoops is from Ohio and played and coached at Iowa, so he is familiar with the Midwest. Allen Kenney of Bleacher Report writes that Stoops is taking an inordinate amount of criticism for the Sooners' struggles this year and may be ready for a new challenge.

STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford Cardinal football coach Jim Harbaugh is close to completing a contract extension with the school.

Athletic director Bob Bowlsby said Sunday in an e-mail that a formal announcement of a new deal was expected to come shortly. The two sides were close to announcing an extension after last season but talks were put on hold in February because of the poor economy.

The Cardinal are looking to lock Harbaugh up with a long-term deal before NFL teams or other colleges come calling after him. Harbaugh figures to be a hot candidate for many open jobs despite his public proclamations that he wants to stay at Stanford.

Before coming to Stanford, Harbaugh coached three seasons at San Diego, which was a non-scholarship Division I-AA school. Harbaugh previously was an assistant in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders. He played 15 years in the NFL, leading the Indianapolis Colts to the 1995 AFC championship game.

Harbaugh is currently in the third year of a five-year contract.
