But Notre Dame took a shot from Benn in that regard. He told the Washington Post in a story published Wednesday that Irish assistant Peter Vaas, whom the school let go after the season, peppered him with text messages and phone calls after he had committed to Illinois.

Benn provided one such text message to the Post dated Dec. 17. It read: "FYI, ILL is telling Robert Hughes that they will build their offense around him. Didn't they tell you that? Coach Vaas."

Weis' reply?

"You ask me if coach Vaas sent him texts. Sure he sent him texts," he said. "You probably could go ask the kid if he committed to us beforehand too—see what he says to that one. It comes down to those silent verbals, all that other type of stuff.

"I don't think coach Vaas was trying to do anything unethical. … [Benn] should wish him well and not point a finger."

Weis not playing favorites in QB competition

SOUTH BEND ? It?s been four days, but already the questions center around Jimmy Clausen.
It is inevitable, really. Clausen came to Notre Dame with so many expectations and plays a position so glamorous that it can?t help but happen.
So far, though, Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis isn?t giving any hints about whether the freshman will inherit the starting quarterback job in the fall. Weis probably doesn?t have much of a clue yet, either.
?He?s made some progress and we?ve seen some encouraging signs, but it is way too early for me to be jumping on anyone?s bandwagon,? Weis said. ?He?s done some encouraging things in the first four days.?

That's why the Notre Dame quarterback believes he is highly qualified to immediately help a troubled NFL franchise -- and why he should be the first Fighting Irish player taken with the opening pick in the NFL draft in 35 years.
"I've been through the adversity. I've gone through losing seasons. I know what it feels like to lose, but I know what it feels like to win," he said. "I know what it's like to go through that transition."
Quinn didn't say it, but he also knows what it's like to try to win when not all the pieces are in place. Quinn played on an Irish team that didn't have overpowering offensive lines and its defense was average at best.
