Should anyone be surprised that the one thing Charlie has been good at is getting rid of the cucakes?

I guess either the allure of "America's favorite team" is dropping pretty quickly or Rutgers ain't the cupcake Notre Dame was hoping it would be and it scuttled the deal behind the scenes.

How low has Notre Dame sunk, when Rutgers dumps them? These kind of things are gonna start affecting SOS, etc.

Of course, these games are played by Notre Dame in the hope that they can establish a recruiting and media presence in the greater New York market while depriving their opponents of any gain in having their team play on the opponents' turf. Whoopsie!


Rutgers-Notre Dame canceled over 'home' stadium terms

Rutgers and Notre Dame have called off plans for a six-game home-and-home series starting in 2010, as Rutgers does not wish to play its home games against the Fighting Irish off-campus.

"Rutgers entered into discussions about a possible long-term series with Notre Dame, but at the end of the day both schools could not agree about the site of the games," Rutgers athletic director Bob Mulcahy said in a prepared statement issued by the university. "We feel Rutgers' home games should be played on campus at Rutgers Stadium."

Mulcahy declined additional comment when reached by phone, according to The Star-Ledger of Newark. N.J.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the Irish wanted Rutgers' three home games in the series to be played at the new Giants/Jets stadium in the Meadlowlands -- a compromise that Rutgers, which is undertaking a $102 million renovation of Rutgers Stadium, was unwilling to make, according to the report.

Rutgers Stadium will hold about 55,000 fans after the renovation is completed in 2009.

Eh, I don't know about this one Steve. They could have a good argument that the site for the Rutgers home stands needed to be more capacious. It isn't as if there are no other options within reach of the Rutgers campus that have additional capacity. Certainly by 2010 the New Meadowlands at 81K capacity would be open for business. If I were in Rutgers shoes I'd jump at the chance for the added ticket sales - with the lions share of the money staying in RU's hands. (Rutgers athletic budget isn't exactly flush and ticket sales on the East Coast could be boosted to three figure levels - before the scalpers get their hands on them.)

My take - bad choice by Rutgers.

I don't know, if Rutgers cares more about its football team than just Revenue, I think I would make the same choice they made too. A game held at the new stadium in NYC would have significantly more Ntre Ame fans than one held on campus. They would then lose a significant amount of home field advantage.

I think sandgk makes excellent points. 55,000 is small.

I also think that this is an indication that teams with any ability are no longer willing to prostitute themselves to say that they "play Notre Dame".

The way things are going, Notre Dame may not be able to fill a 50,000 seater in ten years.

If I'm not mistaken, Autzen (U of Oregon's) Stadium holds 60K. I realize this is minimal compared to the 'Shoe; but it's supposed to be one of the most raucous stadiums in the land. I would imagine this is the desired type of situation for Rutgers.

On a side bar, my first Oregon State game was the Civil War against Oregon. It was played at Oregon State's stadium. Capacity there is about 45K. I almost laughed when I walked in when comparing it to the 'Shoe. But I have to keep in mind the amount of students and the population of Oregon in general.

It's official. ND will join the Big East in football as soon as every school in the Big East agrees to not play home games against ND...at least not at their home stadiums.

From a purely money standpoint, which is what it seems college football is all about these days - spot on. From the standpoint of the Rutgers student, the school made the right call. I'm glad to see them do that, and tell Notre Dame's arrogance to take a hike besides. ND wanted another home game, what with all the ND alums in NYC.

Besides, 55,000 isn't that small. The average BCS stadium (not including those which are NFL stadiums first) is about 60,500.

I'm with sandgk, as much as it pains me to cut Domesr slack, I don't see OSU ever agreeing to a true home and home series with a team that can only put 55K in its stadium.

Just not enough money.
