A college HC is the public face of the team and a representative of the university, if Weis doesn't want, or can't handle, that responsibility, he should not have taken the job. Period. The vast majority of coaches would have handled the questions in a succinct and professional manner. Weis seems to think that such things are below him. If his ego makes him incapable of managing such a simple PR issue, I think it's only a matter of time until his ND career implodes in dramatic fashion.

Are you a mind reader ?? I am sure Charlie "handled it" just because he said "let's me on" does not mean he did nothing. Maybe just maybe he did not want to share it all........

I never said that Weis didn't do anything about the situation, I said he botched the press conference. Though, this exchange does imply that they were given a free pass:
Quote:
Q. The website said they were participating in something called the Beer Olympics.
COACH WEIS: I said let's give them a break and let's move on. That's as far as I'm going to say. I'm not going to take it any further than that.
|
Whether he let it slide or threw the book at them, it's a poor choice of words and attitude. I also said nothing about him giving full disclosure. Tressel doesn't give out much info about internal team issues, but he handles the questions in a professional and amicable manner, and the press and fans accept that he will do what is right. When a public figure responds to a routine question from reporters with a big, fat "I don't have to answer that.", it only exacerbates the situation. There is an automatic implication that something is being hidden, whether that's right or wrong. Most coaches are privvy to the fact that the recitation of stock interview fodder along the lines of "You throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball." can diffuse nearly any situation. Chuck probably won't feel any backlash from this situation because it's so minor, but if he continues to handle things like this, I have to believe the alumni base will start to question whether he's the right man to represent their beloved institution.
Yes, I am a mind reader. No, you're not smarter than all those jerks at BP.

The thing is, all he had to say was "That's been resolved by the coaching staff, next question" and then it's just speculation. Maybe he did resolve it internally and made the kid be little spoon for a few nights, who knows, but Charlies attitude is really what this whole discussion is about.
