Reports: Snead to Transfer IT Staff

According to sources, University of Texas true freshman quarterback Jevan Snead has asked to be released from his scholarship so that he may transfer to a different school.

Several media outlets, including the Dallas Morning News and the Austin American-Statesman reported on Jevan Snead?s desire to transfer, while the Fort Worth Star-Telegram quoted Snead as denying that he had asked for a release to transfer.
At this point, the most likely school appears to be TCU, but Snead has several options such as Houston, UTEP and Louisville available. According to sources, Snead would like to enroll in his new school in January, which significantly decreases the chance that the QB will join the Longhorns for their bowl game.
If Snead leaves the UT program before the bowl game, Colt McCoy?s only back-up will be walk-on senior Matt McCoy. The Horns' only other scholarship QB is true freshman Sherrod Harris, who has not played in '06 and who is unlikely to strip his redshirt for a single game if McCoy is unable to play or is injured again.
Word of a possible transfer first surfaced back in late October, when reports indicated that a party close to the Longhorn back-up had made inquiries with several schools gauging their interest in Snead as a transfer.
But just a couple of weeks later, Snead was pressed into action vs. Kansas State when starter McCoy left the game in the first quarter with a neck injury. He completed 13 of 30 passes for 190 yards and one touchdown vs. the Wildcats in a 45-42 loss that dropped Texas from the national championship picture.
Snead worked with the first team offense during the Horns' bye week and early the week of the A&M game, but was again relegated to back-up duty when the coaches announced McCoy as the Aggie game starter. Despite reports that McCoy was at less than 100-percent for the A&M game, Snead's only action came on the Horns' final desperation drive after McCoy had to be carted off the field.
For the season, Snead completed 26 of 49 passes (53.1 percent) for 371 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Snead was a late commit to Texas after originally committing to Florida. The Stephenville QB was later convinced, in no small part, by fellow QB prospect Harris to come to UT (Tim Tebow?s expected commitment to Florida also played a bit of a role). Future depth at quarterback should not be an issue for the Longhorns, although experienced depth will indeed be lacking. Harris, along with incoming freshmen John Brantley and John Chiles, will compete for playing time at the position next season.

Texas denies reports of QB transfer

AUSTIN (AP) -- No Texas players have been granted a release to transfer, a school official said Thursday amid conflicting reports that backup quarterback Jevan Snead would leave the team.

The Dallas Morning News, Austin American-Statesman and Houston Chronicle reported that Snead plans to transfer, possibly in time to enroll at a new school for the spring semester. Those stories cited anonymous sources.

But Snead told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that he has not asked for a release from his scholarship and said "nothing's happening right now."

Texas spokesman John Bianco said no players had been granted a release as of Thursday afternoon and that conversations players may have had with coach Mack Brown are confidential.

Snead was unavailable for comment, and calls to his parents' home in Stephenville went unanswered Thursday.

Asked Wednesday night if a transfer was something he might consider, Snead told the Star-Telegram: "I don't know. I don't feel comfortable talking about that right now."

Snead was one of Texas' top recruits when he backed out of an oral commitment with Florida and signed with the Longhorns in February. He enrolled in time for spring practice but couldn't beat out redshirt freshman Colt McCoy for the starting job.

Snead completed 26 of 49 passes for 371 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. His most extensive action came in a 45-42 loss at Kansas State. McCoy was hurt on the first drive, and Snead played the rest of the game.

McCoy has passed for 2,262 yards and a school-record 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

McCoy was injured again late in last week's 12-7 loss to Texas A&M, and his status for the Longhorns' bowl game is unclear. Texas appears headed to either the Gator Bowl or Alamo Bowl.

Heh...

Snead leaving to me isn't the best move, with as Injury prone as McCoy is I would hang around, sooner or later he's gonna take one hard hit and Snead would get in. However, that being said, Snead didn't look so hot against K-State when he had is chance.
