mgoblog has a nice summary of how his Defenses have performed - before and during his tenure at different programs.
Plus it notes that this likely sets aside the 3-3-5 as a base Defense.
Of course, this will put his corners out on an island at times - and it demands a good penetrating Defensive line, qualities which may not be immediately available in his first year in AA.

and the Domers were creaming in their pants about a certain schemtac advantage after CW's initial presser. Lets see what changes on the field, he's got a talent/depth issue to overcome before anything else.

Jax - the difference in this case is that Shafer has been there and made a positive contribution in each of his professional stops on the coaching trail, CW on the other hand was unknown as a head coaching commodity.

yeah, I was more referring to the standard coach speak at an initial press conference thing, you never hear one say "we're gong to sit in a soft zone to prevent the big play" or anything like that. They all are going to attack/get in your face/be physical etc.

Yeah, but if you read the mgoblog assessment, you see that Shafer's defenses have been way up the national list in sacks. Stanford was 111th in sacks before he got there, 11th during his year there. Western was actually #1 overall. (Might speak a bit to the quality of O-lines in the MAC, but still.) The numbers are there to back him up.
One thing to note: blitzing the friggin' daylights out of the other team is a great way to level the playing field when you have a talent deficiency every time you step on the field - which has definitely been the case at his last two stops. This will really be the first place he's coached where most of the time, his talent is better than what lines up across from him. It'll be interesting to see if he blitzes Minnesota or Iowa with the same frequency.

Shafer's direct quote...
"Scheme is overrated"
If nothing else this is a guy who gets it.

Taking that second post entirely out of context, one can imagine that statement taking place in an English 317 class discussion.
