Scout.com: Fiu Take ... How Could Michigan Lose?

They’re the ones who were part of the all-timer loss. They’re the ones who’ll have to hear about this for the rest of their lives no matter if they win five Super Bowls and go to the Hall of Fame. They’re the ones who were the leaders of a team that obviously wasn’t focused enough, and Appalachian State took advantage.

This is a team with some all-time caliber offensive talent, and despite the lack of overall starting experience, loads of prep superstars on defense who probably couldn’t even spell Appalachia.

I got a chance to sit down with Chad Henne and Mike Hart, two of Michigan’s offensive superstars, and all they could talk about were Ohio State, whom they’ve never beaten, a bowl game, which they’ve never won, and coming back to school for their senior seasons instead of jumping to the pros. They paid lip service to the rest of the Big Ten schedule, and they each threw out the “one game at a time” clich?, but then the talk soon went back to how their legacies would be defined by what they did at the end of the year against the Buckeyes before finishing up with a possible post-season victory.

I would defend him by saying he doesn't set recruiting philosophy standards. The HC still recruits defensive players that are good at stopping the type of offense he runs, not what other teams run.

I couldn't defend him based on the poor angles and tackling his defense has consistently shown over the past few years. Watch it closely and you always see a tsun Safety come flashing by at a terrible angle, whiff and the other teams offensive highlight reel begins.

Its not Englishes fault he doesn't have great raw materials but it is his fault what he does have is poorly coached.

All that said, ultimately its the HC's responsibility if he has a dud on his staff. No bad privates, only bad seargents as the saying goes.

Also, wasn't there a big to-do about getting RE back after he was leaving a few years back? I thought I recalled a rumor of the administartion applying pressure on carr to take RE back and name him DC so they wouldn't lose his recruiting prowress?

Well yeah. The man is a great, great recruiter (and I don't use the word great too often) and he's a pretty good DC. Unfortunately, when the corners you've given schollies too are Morgan [censored]ing Trent and Johnny "OH look I just got burnt again" Sears, English is at quite the disadvantage, much like Lloyd vs. any other coach.

The thing I admire about OSU is they know where the priorities are. It's easier to find some LBs and D-linemen when you play in a 3 yards and a cloud of dust conference such as the Big 10. OSU knows it needs to offer some corners and safeties to compete with everyone else. TAKE A [censored]ING HINT GUYS! Warren and Cissoko are nice starts, but it seems like OSU finds stud DBs every year.

OSU's DB's are largely unheralded recruits that were identified by the OSU coaches and coached up. Coleman is the only starter higher than a 3-star. Jenkins, Russell, Chekwa, and Washington were all 2-3 star guys with little to no other bigtime offers. Recruiting is only half the battle - sooner or later the coaches have to take responsibility for developing that talent.

A great example of the current conversation is the fact that Michigan has 14 commits and only 3 are defensive players. IMO the performance yesterday will not help out with all the players they think they have in the bush.

15 and 4. Christian Wilson is one, but he will either go LB or H-Back, probably H-Back. Other than that it's Cissoko, Martin, and Fitzgerald. Koger could also play some DE. But I do get your point. It's flat out ridiculous. GET SOME [censored]ING DEFENSIVE BACKS! Ah Justin King a couple years ago would have been really nice for starters.
