Five Connecticut players charged in shooting

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- Five Connecticut football players were charged in a case in which the window of a vehicle was shot out as two cars passed in a parking lot.
The five were arrested Sunday following a complaint at a convenience store, police said.

The driver's side window of one car was shot, although it was not immediately clear which car was hit. The suspects fled in a sport utility vehicle and were located a few minutes later, police added.

Tyvon Branch, Daniel Davis, Daniel Lansanah and Marvin Taylor were charged with possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle and released after posting $750 bond.

Donta Moore was charged with possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, second-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree criminal mischief, third-degree assault, unlawful discharge of a firearm. He was released after posting $1,000 bail.

Branch is a sophomore safety, Davis is a sophomore defensive end, Lansanah is a sophomore linebacker, Moore is a junior safety and Taylor is a sophomore safety.

A message left at the university Monday was not immediately returned.

Interesting case. He gets 45 days in the slammer for repeated traffic violations, but won't miss any games.

Georgia DT gets jail sentence but no suspension

ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia defensive tackle Darrius Swain was sentenced to 45 days in jail for repeated driver's license violations, and began serving the term immediately.
Swain also was ordered Tuesday by Clarke County Judge Kay Giese to spend 40 hours in community service.

Swain was arrested Saturday night and charged with driving with a suspended license and following too closely. It was his third arrest for driving with a suspended license in the last two years.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said Swain would be disciplined internally but would not be suspended for any games.

"With the time in confinement, Darrius is paying a heavy price for his license violations," Richt said. "Hopefully he has learned an important lesson."

ISU's Berryman's return undecided

AMES, Iowa (AP) -- No decision has been reached on Jason Berryman's possible return to Iowa State's football team, athletic director Bruce Van De Velde said.

Berryman, a defensive end who was ISU's most valuable player in 2003, spent more than eight months in the Story County jail for mugging an Iowa State student, taking $4 from him and stealing another student's cell phone. He was released April 18.

Van De Velde has met with Berryman, but he said Thursday that he is not comfortable talking about Berryman's status as an athlete until he re-enrolls as a student.
"After that is done, if that happens, then we will tackle the [football] issue. Until then ... there's nothing to comment on," Van De Velde said.

Berryman is not enrolled for the summer school session that begins Monday, according to ISU's registrar's office.

Van De Velde said he did not want to discuss Berryman's plans until that first step is taken.

"Not to say that he will or won't [re-enroll], I think it's too early to comment," he said.

Van De Velde did not say whether Berryman appeared eager to come back to ISU during their meeting.

"We didn't get into that," he said. "It was all very general."

Berryman pleaded guilty last fall to first-degree theft, a felony, and assault causing injury, a misdemeanor. He was sentenced to 300 days jail then released early for good behavior.

Part of his sentence includes two years of probation.

Berryman has met at least once with coach Dan McCarney since he was released from jail. The coach indicated after the meeting last month that he was a long way from making a decision on whether Berryman could play for the Cyclones again.

Van De Velde said he and McCarney have not discussed the situation much.

Iowa State begins pre-season practice in early August.

Tennessee's McDaniel indicted, faces felony assault charge

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee defensive tackle Tony McDaniel was indicted on a felony charge of aggravated assault for allegedly hitting a student in the face during a pickup basketball game on campus in January.
A Knox County grand jury handed down the indictment Tuesday, according to court documents obtained by the Associated Press on Wednesday.

McDaniel, who will be a junior this fall, was suspended from the team after the assault. He made his first career start for Tennessee in the Volunteers' 38-7 win over Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl.

McDaniel is one of 11 Tennessee players who have been either arrested or cited for crimes ranging from aggravated assault to underage drinking since February 2004.

The 6-foot-7, 295-pound McDaniel is accused of hitting Edward Goodrich, a 26-year-old student. Goodrich testified during a hearing in April that his face was broken in four places and doctors had to insert a metal plate to treat his injuries.
