Oklahoma fullback Zaslaw arrested

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- Oklahoma fullback Dane Zaslaw has been arrested on two misdemeanor charges after an incident at a Norman club.

Zaslaw, 21, was arrested at 1:50 a.m. Friday and booked into the Cleveland County jail on counts of public intoxication and disturbing the peace, police Lt. Leonard Judy said.

Police arrested two other men outside the club and reported witnessing Zaslaw in the doorway to the club "punching his fists in the air as if challenging others to fight," Judy said.

Zaslaw, a sophomore, played in five games last year as the backup to starter J.D. Runnels and is a candidate to replace Runnels next season. He does not have a carry or a reception in his college career.

No court date has been set for Zaslaw.

Fulmer drops the hammer.

Fulmer blasts team after LB arrested
Mitchell suspended for Monday incident
Wednesday, 05/03/06
By CHRIS LOW
Staff Writer

KNOXVILLE — An infuriated Tennessee Coach Phillip Fulmer unloaded on his team during an emotional meeting Monday night following the arrest of fifth-year senior linebacker Marvin Mitchell.

"It's embarrassing to all of us," Fulmer said. "I made it very clear that we're not going down this road again. If they don't represent us in the right way, then they're not going to be here. It's that simple."

Mitchell, the Vols' starting middle linebacker, has been indefinitely suspended from the team by Fulmer.

Mitchell's suspension comes after being arrested by UT police and charged with disorderly conduct following an incident at approximately 3:15 on Monday morning at the Rocky Top Market on the Cumberland Avenue strip.

It's the first arrest of a Vol football player since a rash of off-the-field problems last spring.

Since January 2005, nine players have either been arrested or issued citations, but Fulmer said there had been no issues in nearly a year until Mitchell's arrest.

"That's what makes me so angry," Fulmer said.

"We hadn't had anything. Now we have one guy who's embarrassed us all. It's not fair, but that's the way it is."

Police said when they arrived to disperse a disruptive crowd early Monday morning at the market, they heard Mitchell shouting and swearing at another customer near the front door.

According to the UT police report, Mitchell threatened to "knock the customer out."

Sensing that an altercation was about to occur, police told Mitchell to leave and noticed a strong odor of alcohol on his breath.

Mitchell initially left, according to police, but came back into the store and began swearing at someone else.

When police again told Mitchell to leave the area, he told one of the officers to "chill the (bleep) out," according to the police report.

While police were escorting Mitchell out of the store, the report stated that he became verbally abusive and continued to swear.

Police said while trying to establish control of Mitchell that he pulled away from them three times and was uncooperative during the completion of the arrest report.

Mitchell was booked into the Knox County Detention Center and released on $500 bond. His arraignment has been scheduled for May 8.

Fulmer noted that this was Mitchell's first discipline issue in four-plus years in the program.

Also, Fulmer said he's told his players to stay away from the Rocky Top Market, where several UT athletes in past years have run into trouble with the law.

In announcing Mitchell's suspension yesterday, UT took the rare step of including comments from other players.

"Coach Fulmer laid down the law at our meeting," junior quarterback Erik Ainge said in a statement. "He made it very clear that we had not had problems in a long time, and he would not tolerate problems in the future. Marvin is a good kid and hasn't been in trouble since he's been here, but he made a mistake." n

Senior defensive tackle Turk McBride added, "Coach Fulmer has made it very clear what is expected of us. He was very angry and very emotional at our meeting (Monday) night. I think the guys understand that he's not going to tolerate problems."

Another UT player disciplined, this time by dismissal
Fulmer kicks redshirt lineman Henderson off team
Wednesday, 05/03/06
By CHRIS LOW
Staff Writer

KNOXVILLE – On the heels of Tennessee senior linebacker Marvin Mitchell's being indefinitely suspended from the team, Coach Phillip Fulmer has permanently dismissed redshirt freshman defensive lineman Raymond Henderson.

Fulmer said he initially told Henderson that he was off the team during a fiery team meeting on Monday night. Mitchell was arrested and charged for disorderly conduct earlier that morning.

Part of Fulmer’s ire was also directed at Henderson during that meeting for what Fulmer called an “inappropriate” encounter Henderson had at a restaurant with a woman and her adolescent daughter.

Fulmer declined to discuss the specifics of the incident, but said Henderson was not arrested.

“I’m not putting up with any more of these type things, and I’ve made that as clear to the players as I possibly can,” Fulmer said.

Several players said they have never seen Fulmer as irate as he was during Monday night’s meeting and said he was even throwing water bottles during his tirade.

“The sad thing is that it’s just a few guys embarrassing us,” Fulmer said. “But we’re not going to tolerate any of it.”

Fulmer said Mitchell’s potential return to the team would hinge on his meeting certain requirements and conditions. Mitchell, who exited the spring as the Vols’ starting middle linebacker, may also face suspension from games if he’s allowed to return.

“If he doesn’t do what he’s supposed to, then he won’t be with us,” Fulmer said. “He’s got to make better decisions than he did the other night.”

The Vols had gone nearly a year without any off-the-field issues until the two recent incidents with Mitchell and Henderson.

A highly rated defensive end prospect from Oak Creek, Wis., Henderson was redshirted last season. He wasn’t mentioned much this spring by the coaches when discussing the defensive line rotation and finished the spring at tackle.

Hale, Ward plead not guilty to felony assault charges
Associated Press

LOS ANGELES
-- UCLA linebacker John Hale and defensive tackle Jess Ward pleaded not guilty Thursday to felony assault charges, stemming from a February altercation at Ward's parents' home.

The freshmen turned themselves in to court officials in San Bernardino County when they learned warrants for their arrest had been issued the previous day, UCLA sports information director Marc Dellins said.

Hale had 20 tackles while playing in 11 of the Bruins' 12 games last season, including seven starts. Ward redshirted.

A call to Michael Berger, the attorney for Hale and Ward, was not immediately returned.

A call to the San Bernardino County district attorney's office after business hours was not returned. Cindy Beavers, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County sheriff's department, said she was not aware of the case, adding that there were no records of Hale and Ward being booked at sheriff's facilities.

Ward's family lives in Running Springs, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles. The altercation involved guests at the house, and, according to UCLA, two other men were arrested the day after it happened.

"We are aware of the circumstances that occurred in Jess' parents' home," UCLA coach Karl Dorrell said. "John and Jess called me the day after the incident and told me what happened. It appears that John and Jess were not involved in the altercation other than trying to move it out of the house.

"Based on the information available to us, we have decided to wait until the outcome of the legal process to impose any disciplinary action," he said.
