Ex-Husker Jones jailed for theft

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- Former Nebraska cornerback Andre Jones is jailed in Lincoln, accused of stealing a big-screen television in June.

Jones, who played for the Cornhuskers in 2006 and '07, was arrested Monday and is being held on a $3,000 percentage bond. Lincoln police allege that in Jones stole a 50-inch Pioneer Plasma TV worth about $2,800 from the basement of a home where he'd been staying.

The owner of the home is Marcus Young II, whose son, Dreu Young, is a sophomore tight end for the Huskers.

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Clemson safety DeAndre McDaniel will be accepted into a program for first-time offenders to resolve charges of aggravated assault and battery.

Pickens County chief prosecutor Bob Ariail said in a statement Friday that the victim and police officials have agreed to allow McDaniel into a pretrial intervention program. Terms of the deal have not been released.

McDaniel was arrested in June. According to a police incident report, his girlfriend told police he covered her head with a comforter, punched her and pushed her down a flight of stairs.

McDaniel has remained in school and on the football team since his arrest. Clemson coach Tommy Bowden said Friday he will make a recommendation to athletic director Terry Don Phillips next week on McDaniel's team status.

Colorado player gets probation in off-campus fight

BOULDER, Colo. -- Colorado tight end Riar Greer was sentenced to two years' probation and 50 hours of community service after pleading guilty in an off-campus brawl.

Boulder County District Judge Maria Berkenkotter sentenced Greer on Monday. The 21-year-old Greer avoided a jail term of up to two years.

He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor third-degree assault stemming from a fight on March 14. In exchange, prosecutors dropped charges of felony second-degree assault and misdemeanor harassment.

Longhorns DT Houston suspended after being charged with DWI

Texas defensive tackle Lamarr Houston was suspended at least for the Longhorns' upcoming game Saturday at UTEP after he was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after being involved in an accident in Austin earlier Sunday.

Texas coach Mack Brown made the announcement late Sunday evening after meeting with Houston and his family.

"We decided that he will not be making the trip to El Paso and play in this week's game," Brown said in a prepared statement. "He asked to apologize to the team and did so at our team meeting earlier today. The issue will be handled within the team and any further action will be addressed at the appropriate time."

Police investigate 'incident'

For at least two hours Tuesday night into this morning, Penn State Police investigated a Nittany Apartments residence that, according to an online Penn State directory, is inhabited by multiple football players.

Penn State Police Sgt. Brian Bittner said police were investigating "an incident." He would not comment further.

Police entered apartment 5204 late last night for unknown reasons. According to the directory, defensive end Maurice Evans, cornerback A.J. Wallace and defensive tackle Abe Koroma live in apartment 5204.

It was not immediately clear if any other people live in the apartment.

At least four Penn State Police vehicles were at the scene -- a Special Response Unit, two cruisers and an SUV.

Update of Penn State "incident". Police searched the player's apartment after obtaining a search warrant on the grounds of the smell of marijuana. A small amount of MJ was seized. AJ Wallace, Andrew Quarless, Maurice Evans and Abe Koroma are listed as the residents. Wallace reportedly claimed that he does not live there anymore (the drugs were found in his bedroom), and Aristides Nova now occupies the room.

Wisconsin LB Casillas cited for drunken driving on mo-ped

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin senior linebacker Jonathan Casillas was cited for drunken driving last month while riding a mo-ped.

A University of Wisconsin-Madison police officer stopped Casillas Aug. 24 just after midnight and a breath test showed his blood alcohol concentration to be 0.15 percent, nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08.

The 21-year-old Casillas received three citations -- first-offense drunken driving, driving with a prohibited alcohol concentration and driving with two persons on a mo-ped.

Coach Bret Bielema told the Wisconsin State Journal Tuesday night he'd already disciplined Casillas and that he faces no more punishment in the matter.

A bad headline. The charge is for child abuse for a 4-month old baby boy. In either case it's a very serious crime, but to me the headline imples a sexual abuse charge involving a kid, and this seems completely different.

K-State RB Patton charged with abusing boy, dismissed from team

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) -- Kansas State junior running back Leon Patton was dismissed from the team on Friday, a day after Riley County Police arrested him on charges of child abuse of a 4-month-old.

Patton, 20, was arrested and jailed on $30,000 bond in a July 15 incident in the Manhattan area. A police news release said the victim was a 4-month-old boy but offered no other details.

Calls to Riley County Police Department spokesman Lt. Kurt Moldrup was not immediately returned Friday.

Patton was already on probation after an early July traffic stop led to the discovery of two outstanding warrants. He was issued a citation for driving with a suspended license and a routine background check found outstanding warrants for theft of two video games at Wal-Mart in Pottawatomie County in 2007 and a failure-to-appear charge on an unpaid parking ticket in Manhattan, Kan.

He pleaded no contest and was sentenced to six months probation and fined $100.

Kansas State coach Ron Prince announced Patton's dismissal from the team through a news release, which said no further comments would be made because a formal investigation was under way.

USC recruit Simmons gets four years in prison for armed robbery


COMPTON, Calif. (AP) -- A former high school football star and Southern California recruit has been sentenced to four years in prison for robbing a man at gunpoint.

The player, Maurice Leon Simmons, 18, and another man, Lamont Lee Hall, 20, were sentenced Wednesday for the March 5 holdup in Compton.
Superior Court Judge Arthur Lew sentenced Hall to 12 years in prison.

Simmons, a former linebacker for Dominguez High School in Compton, and Hall were both convicted of second-degree robbery and assault with a firearm. Simmons also was convicted of a misdemeanor, permitting a loaded firearm in a vehicle. Hall was convicted of possession of a firearm by a f

Ex-Husker Thunder Collins Charged With Murder

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Former Nebraska running back Thunder Collins was arrested Wednesday, nearly 24 hours after a shooting left one person dead and another seriously wounded.

Collins was in police custody and faced murder charges, Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said. Also charged was 21-year-old Ahmad Johnson. Both men face first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and felony weapons charges.

Timothy Thomas was killed about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in a midtown Omaha neighborhood. Around the same time, a white SUV hit several cars nearby. Police found Marshall Turner -- who'd been hit by gunfire -- inside. He was in critical condition Wednesday at an Omaha hospital.
