So that the two teams playing in the national title game have proved it on the field against indisputable competition. There, I said it. If you need me to elaborate, it's in the thread.
Sorry, but neither Ohio State, West Virginia, or Missouri have played any teams worthy of being considered top tier teams.

I am a long time opponent of a playoff (anything more than 4 teams) for the very reason that I could live with one this year. In almost every season one or two teams - sometimes three - separate themselves from the pack.
This year nobody has, so what the hell.
But unless what we are seeing this year becomes the norm, I stay with my original position. What you have accomplished over a 12 games season should count for more than the one game you played against the #8 seed in the rain with your starting quarterback on the bench with a concussion.
And without reading all the new posts in this thread since the last time I visited, has anyone come up with the playoff scenario that appropriately addresses this year's SEC? Particularly if Tenn wins next Saturday.

I didn't know playing football in the rain wasn't playing football. That sounds like an SEC complaint.
Bottom Line: Most years, that #8 seed will be better than 11 or 12 of your opponents. Sorry, but beating teams like East Carolina and Akron do little to show me any team's worth. They are important games for a team to grow. But they mean jack [censored] to show if a team is national championship calibar - unless of course you put up 66 on one of those teams - then the media crowns your ass.
And I don't know why we always try to debate the playoff format. It's simple. Five teams from the champions of the major conferences, and then 3 at-large teams. (I don't count the Big East as a major conference). If you're the ninth team, bitch and moan to yourself. The regular season has to mean something and if you didn't put yourself in the top 8, then imagine where you'd be in the [censored]ty BCS.

And that right there says everything about why there will never be a playoff system. , because someone will always be unsatisfied and whine and moan just like they do now. You are not fixing the problem you are just moving the dynamics of it.

while it's not a "fix" having the odd man out at number 9, 13, or whatever seems more fair than numbers 3,4,5,6 .. keep the bowls, keep the bcs forumla, take the top 12 teams and go play for it.

It's the same thing in the NCAA tournament. Some 19-12 team is bitching because their bubble got burst. But I don't see anyone arguing that we should just scrap the tournament and have the top two teams, subjectively decided by the wisemen in the media, play for the national title.
And the dynamics change to improvement the system - not to perfect it. Perfection is the aspiration of fools.

I think there will be a playoff when the money from it reaches a point where the college Presidents decide they must do something to protect the "integrity" of the game. It may never happen as long as the bowls bring in adequate funding. The institutions and Presidents do not care who wins enough to rock the boat.
A playoff would be interesting, but I usually enjoy the controversy and bellyaching involved with the current system. You would go from teams #3-10 crying about lack of respect to teams 9-15 crying about being left out. I like it more when the crying is coming from the elite progams.
Besides, it would have to be at least a 12-16 team playoff in order to allow any teams other than the SEC in
