Amusing Bob Stoops quote from 2002
From a 2002 ESPN article;
"Stoops said the teams that play for the national title should at least have won a conference championship. Last year, Nebraska made it to the national championship game after not even winning the North Division of the Big 12."
I wonder if he still feels that way? This isn't a knock on Bob, I completely respect him, but I still found this kind of funny.

situations change... comments are also sure to change...
I agree with the statement... if you can not win your conference you sure don't deserve a shot at the NC...
He also said it wasn't fair that some conferences play a title game and others don't... he thinks all should, or the conference champ. game shouldn't be counted... sounds like he wants the upside of the game ($$$$$) but not the downside.... somebody needs to remind him that almost everything has a pro/con relationship...

I agree with it too. I'm kind of surprised that someone somewhere (with some degree of control) hasn't said "until every BCS conference has a championship, those games will not count directly* towards the BCS."
Conf. championship games should obviously go towards the conference title, but it just doesn't make any sense for it to work for or against a team when other majors (Big Ten, Pac 10, etc.) don't have one.

IF they want the $$$ it brings in... they need to put up with the fact that it can screw that team if they lose IMO (granted it didn't matter this year).... I was kind of hopeing that they wouldn't make it to the Sugar... I figure they like getting the $$ from the game, so why not let the thing blow up in their face ... I know it's an evil thought, but I'm sick of these guys wanting only the good side, and not face the bad side of the risks they are taking...
I frankly think they should go the other route and not allow a conference champ. game... I like the way the Big Ten does it (execpt that I wish we could all play each other and only have two ooc games each before the season..)

How is this any different than NCAA Basketball all those years that the Big 10 did not have a conference tourney? The conference champion was the team with the best record, and the automatic bid. The conferences that had tourneys recognized the tourney champ as the conference champ and they got the bid. Now I know a lot more teams go to the tourney and the conference champ usually got a bid, but think of the smaller conferences, like the Southern. The team that goes undefeated in the regular season in the conference and loses the tourney to the team that didn't win a game, usually does not go to the NCAA tourney.

Under normal circumstances I'd argue that you can't draw a parallel to basketball, as every single game in college football is effectively life or death when it comes to a shot at the national championship. But Oklahoma shot holes in that theory this year.
