Yes, yes. I mean, I like to think I follow this stuff pretty closely... and have done so for a few years now... but this news has simply floored me. Never saw it coming. Mallet was almost the perfect fit for the Read Option. All he could do better is be more mobile, and damn, he'd be an EXACT fit. Mallett says he felt 'forced out' because of U-M coach Rodriguez's offense

Ryan Mallett said the decision was difficult but, ultimately, he could not see himself playing in Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez's system.

Mallett, who saw significant playing time in the 2007 season, is no longer with the Wolverines. He left Ann Arbor at 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday to make the long drive back home to Arkansas.

"I felt like I was forced out because of the offense that's coming in," Mallett said by phone during his drive. "I was recruited to be a drop-back passer. I have nothing against coach Rod, but the system is forcing me out."

Mallett said he did not immediately decide to leave Michigan when Rodriguez was hired. Mallett said he made the first call to Michigan's new coach and they met in person, he said, for about five minutes.

"I was still feeling it out," Mallett said. "I'm sure he could have (molded the system around Mallett), but it's still the spread game. Tell me how many guys have run the spread and made it past college to the next level? I'm not thinking about the next level right now, but I just felt it was best for me to move on."

Mallet is so good at everything, he has just been named recruiting coordinator at tOSU with his comment "Tell me how many guys have run the spread and made it past college to the next level?"

His first target as coordinator is somewhere in Western PA.

I think I'm missing something here. The Transplanted One did well with a pocket passer like Shaun King at Tulane. Seems to me he's putting an awful lot of eggs in the basket of a freshman QB now that Henne and Mallet are gone. I realize he'd rather have Pat White than Shaun King but is running someone off with Mallet's talent level really the smart move?

Ryan Mallett officially left Michigan's football team Wednesday, withdrawing from the university.

But the U-M freshman quarterback has known for a while that he was a square peg in the round hole of new coach Rich Rodriguez's spread offense.

"I just felt forced out, not by any person, but by the system," Mallett said late Wednesday night. "I just don't think me and his system ... it just doesn't fit."

Simply watching West Virginia play was enough to direct Mallett.

"Looking at their game film, you can see what they're trying to do with (running quarterback) Pat White," Mallett said. "I didn't think I could do that the same way."

His next move is less clear. He said he's looking at a few schools and may speak to UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel today, but understands that, to get enrolled at a new school, he may have to move fast.

That's kinda, sorta what what DickRod said to the WVU people. In his little mind, since the schools colors were the same it was OK to recruit for one while still on the others pay roll. Even if Pryor goes with DickRod he'll be leaving for the NFL before he has enough of a supporting cast to beat us.

If you really want someone... and let's face it, lots of folks want Pryor... you do what you have to to get him.

I guessed that was why Schoenhoft was suddenly a tight end. Keeps OSU on Pryor's list, perhaps keeps Henton happy and givea good, hard working kid a possible starting slot that he ain't going to see given current developments.

I think it finishes Michigan for the first half of next year when added to the loss of Arrington and the probable loss of Manningham.

As much as I enjoy rubbing Michigan's face in it, what happened to Henne, Hart and Long, out of the BCs by week 2 and unable to beat OSU in 4 tries has to make ALL juniors at any school think twice about hanging around for senior year if there's any shot at being in the first two rounds.
