I'm far too lazy to read back through the thread, but I wonder if Mallett's high school announcers ever said stuff like:

"Mallett hammers it home"

"Mallett bashes cross town rival"

"Mallett sledges the defense for another 100 yard bomb"

"Mallett pounds the nail in the coffin on that throw"

"Mallett strikes down the opposition"

"Mallett bludgeons his opponent"

"Mallett nailed my sister and your sister too"

Apparently Arkansas is considering a petition to the NCAA asking for Mallett to be immediatley eligible.

Arkansas is contemplating an appeal for former Michigan QB Ryan Mallett to play this fall. According to NCAA rules, Mallett must sit out a season because he transferred from one Division I school to another. Although the NCAA has been more lenient lately in transfer cases, this one could be defining. Players often sign with universities because of coaches and systems. Given that coaches are free to move from school to school, players should be allowed to appeal specific situations. . . .

The only people to root for in this whole flame war are the players caught in the crossfire, the collateral damage -- most notably quarterback Ryan Mallett.
Mallett, a freshman, was supposed to be Michigan's next great quarterback, until the Wolverines hired Rodriguez to replace Lloyd Carr. Rodriguez's spread-option offense requires a quick, nimble quarterback who is as dangerous with his feet as with his arm -- not a classic dropback passer like Mallett.
It was telling that one of Rodriguez's first calls upon taking the Michigan job was to high school stud Terrelle Pryor, a QB who seems to fit his offense perfectly. Mallett didn't need it to be spelled out for him: his services at Michigan were no longer required.
He had essentially two choices -- stay at Michigan and quite possibly sit on the bench the rest of his career, or transfer to another Division I school and sit out a season. He chose the latter, transferring to Arkansas two weeks ago.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Arkansas will ask the NCAA to allow transfer quarterback Ryan Mallett to play immediately for the Razorbacks without sitting out a year.


Mallett transferred from Michigan after Rich Rodriguez replaced retiring coach Lloyd Carr.


"After visiting with Ryan and his parents, we feel that it is appropriate to file a waiver in this case based on extenuating circumstances," Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long said in a release. "While the outcome of the waiver request is uncertain, we feel strongly that as an institution we should offer our full support to Ryan and his family in this process."


When contacted by The Associated Press, a school spokesman would not elaborate on what Long meant by "extenuating circumstances."

I just don't really feel like there is a way to allow this without opening the flood gates. You allow a player to transfer because of a coaching change with a new system, next players start following coaches to new schools without consequence. Really feel for Mallett in the situation, because he is the one getting screwed, but I don't see how they would grant this one.

Just make it so the transferring player sits out a year, only if, they transfer to the same school the coach is going to.

Allow a free transfer in exchange for that year without a scholarship. Just an idea... might not be smart enough.
