Dennis Erickson is the first to accept his share of the blame for Arizona State's first loss of the season and of his Sun Devils' coaching tenure.

In his Sunday dissection of a 35-23 loss to now No. 3-ranked Oregon, Erickson questioned some of the offensive play calling inside the 20-yard line. He admitted to poor clock management late in the first half and said that he should have attempted a two-point conversion after the Sun Devils' scored in the fourth quarter.

"Everybody is involved in that loss like everybody is involved in a win," Erickson said. "There's not a guy in that locker room who didn't have something to do with that loss. Everybody's got to ask why and get on to the next one. Those losses last a lot longer than the wins, so you've got to get out of that and get going."

Arizona State's Dennis Erickson is the first to win Pac-10 Coach of the Year at three schools.

Erickson was named Coach of the Year Monday for guiding the Sun Devils to a 10-2 record and Pac-10 co-championship in his first season at ASU. He also was Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 1988 at Washington State and 2000 at Oregon State. He also has been named top coach in the Big Sky and Big East conferences. Others to win the Pac-10 award three times are Don James, all at Washington, and Pete Carroll at Southern California.

"It's a tremendous honor," Erickson said. "To be voted by the other coaches is the biggest honor.

Snyder issued a statement through the university's sports information office confirming that he has cancer, though he wasn't specific about the kind or severity.

In the statement, the 68-year-old former coach said he appreciates the public support, but he also asked for privacy.

Snyder, the 1996 NCAA coach of the year, went 58-47 in nine seasons for the Sun Devils. He was dismissed after the 2000 season despite getting to the Aloha Bowl.

Snyder previously coached at California and Utah State.

Corey Adams grew up in AZ going to ASU games. One of Corey's teammates and supposed best friends (Kody Koebensky) has already committed to ASU for 2009. But, because I live in CA for many years and have had that same Buckeye magical influence over me and mine my whole life away from Buckeye land, and based on not only what I've read about a similar atmospheric situation being in the Adams family, (I have trouble even watching the games I get so worked up in a frenzy), but that he listed us and USC as his top two(understanding that that changes constantly with any of these kids)...then I go out on a proverbial w/this prediction that he is S&G when the day is done. That's all.

I am an ASU alum and am just putting my two cents in. I haven't seen anywhere that USC and tOSU are Corey's top two? I have seen a top 3 which included ASU, but I haven't read every article, so I might be wrong. If you can provide that article, I would appreciate it.

How is ASU not moving in the right direction? Did you watch any Pac-10 games last year or are you still thinking this is 2006? Like I said, tOSU has a better football program but to minimize the ASU recruiting class just because they didn't have as many stars next to their name is pretty ridiculous. Lots of 2 & 3 star recruits will be just as good as the 5 star guys. Obviously ASU wouldn't turn down 4 & 5 star guys, but that doesn't dictate everything. ASU had the 21st/17th best ranked recruiting class in the nation and are ranked in the top 15 for this upcoming season. ASU should have been in the Fiesta Bowl last year being co-Pac-10 champions. Do you remember the name of the head coach before Dennis Erickson without googling it? He SUCKED and tore the team apart and that's why he got fired. So I would say the ship is moving in the right direction. You can have whatever opinion you want.

I'm not coming on these boards to rant about ASU, I was simply stating that tOSU isn't a lock for Adam's services.

I don't put any more stock in stars than the next guy - not when it comes to a single player. But the teams who consistently recruit highly ranked players consistently put better teams on the field. Four and five star players consistently perform better than two and three star players. Not always - but consistently. The correlations are very strong. (It is the fact that there are far more of the latter that feeds the misconception.)

ASU is improving. But a team that gave up 168 points in its last five games is quite a way from playing for an NC. And five of the top 7 ranked players from last years class are JUCOs who will be gone in two years. JUCOs are a quick fix - not a foundation for championships.

You may well land Adams. I have no idea where the kid is going. I am only saying that if he wants to play for an NC in the next four years he needs to cross the Arizona border to do it. A

And of course, if you do lose him you might well land a three star DL in his place - which is just as good, right?

Dexter Davis is ASU's best defensive player and he was a 2 star recruit. I think he's rated the second best DE in the Pac-10. So yes, a 2 or 3 star guy can be just as good as a 5 star guy.

In the last 5 games of the year was when we lost our 3 games. I am not ashamed of losing to USC, Oregon (with Dennis Dixon) and Texas. It would be interesting to see how many points tOSU would have given up?

I would be just as happy landing a 3 star recruit if he panned out! Obviously the home town school wants to land home grown talent and it is frustrating when they leave to play for another state. ASU needs to land local talent to be the program we Arizonan's want them to be. Just like Ohio State lands all the local talent, Arizona needs to do the same and we aren't ever going to get over the top if we lose what should be our easiest pick-ups. If all in-state talent see's better opportunity elsewhere, we're always going to be fighting an up-hill battle.

Asking what tOSU would give up in points to those teams is slightly irrelevant, but when your team did face a team of that caliber (LSU), tOSU gave up 38 points. ASU faced 3 really good teams last year vs. tOSU faced one.

There's my sign of peace and no disrespect to the tOSU fans. Even though I still have a very big grudge about the 1996 Rose Bowl. That could have been championship #1 for ASU's football program! I hate David Boston - and ASU's secondary coach's.

It was 168 and you need to have your balls busted because it is two more points than OSU gave up - in either of its last two seasons. (Although we admittedly played only one more team with 9 or more wins than ASU last season - so I guess our schedule was weaker somehow.)

And no disrespect intended to your program. Never said you weren't improving or that you didn't have a nice football team. Only saying that you have a way to go to contend for the NC.

Just sayin'. Not only does it come off disrespectful, it comes off as ignorant. We didn't play an awesome schedule, but it wasn't as bad as the media makes it sound.
