Here's my two cents. The coaching situation in the Big 10 has been pretty bad, and may as a result be why the conference is "down" as a whole.
As of this season, you either had a dinosaur (PSU, UM, Purdue), a newbie (NU, Minnesota, IU), an overrated douche (UW, Iowa), an up-and-comer (Illinois, MSU) or, well.. a bad-ass mofo (The Tressel). So, two, maybe three, good coaches out of eleven. Not all that great.
With Dick Rod at scUM, the rivalry is almost certainly on the upswing, if only for the media implications of bringing in a fresh "big name" coach with a fancy new offense. We'll see how quickly Rodriguez will implement his offense and how he handles The Game. If he embraces the rivalry and can quickly mold the players he has to fit their new roles (not to mention field a competent defense), then we'll have a serious fight. If he ends up trying to hammer a square peg into a round hole, then he will be scUM's John L. Smith, simple as that.

I know one bunch that's thrilled about this hire: Maryland fans. That's a spiteful rivalry (neither group of fans is what you'd call "classy" or "well-behaved") and Maryland hasn't beaten him since 2003.

My guess is RR does well at UM. Recruiting is 90% of the game and as far as recruiting goes RR has a ton more to offer at UM than he did at WVA. Even losing almost every year to tOSU and looking lost in the bowl games UM has had highly rated recruiting class over the last 5 year.
It will take a year or so for him to have things running to his liking. I still think he goes at least 8-4 his first year. After that he won't win them all but who does?

I was really looking forward to seeing OHio State and WVU in the N/C game.
Mainly because 4 days before WVU and Pitt played. Tim Brando of FOX Sport News was quoted as saying that West Virginia would run Ohio State right out of the SuperDome. But Pitt put and end to all of that. Is the spread offense that hard to defend against? I know that Jim Tressle and his staff had a difficult time against Illinois. I guess the main man in the spread is the QB or is it in the receivers he has?

Actually in my mind the comparisons to John Cooper keep coming back....
we'll see, certainly he'll win a lot more than he loses at scUM, but he might not quite get "The Game" in a similar fashion to how Cooper didn't either.

Tim Brando is on CBS television and on Sporting News Radio, which is essentially CBS as well....
