Paterno vs Bowden
Do you think that Paterno and Bowden are "hanging in there" to end up with the record for most wins? And Thus overstaying in their careers.

Its part of it.
I think overall its just a simple case of an icon not noticing how far he's slipped with no one around him to tell him its time to call it a day.
IMO, there isn't anyone in the world who is better at their job(or almost anything else for that matter) in their 80's than they were back in the day. It just does not work like that.

I saw the title for this thread, and I thought maybe there was some sort of "Battle of the Bowels" that I missed.
Sometimes, people in any line of work hang on too long because their work is their life. They wouldn't know what else to do. I can't help but see some of that in play here, especially with Paterno.

At least JoePa has had a better season in recent years.
Two years ago, he had a one-loss team and PSU finished #3 in the nation.
I don't even know the last time FSU finished in the top 10.

The Nit fans are really [censored]ed this time! Wonder how long that will last?
Wonder how long Joe can hold down that program?
The fans have gone down hill with the program.
Wonder if there's a correlation?

In 2000, when JoePa and Penn State were in free-fall, Bobby was asked if he would retire if he saw the program start to deteriorate. The elder Bowden asked for clarification, and was asked specifically how many losses in a season would cause him to retire.
His response was, "Oh, four or five".
His records since making that statement:
2001: 8-4
2002: 9-5
2003: 10-3
2004: 9-3
2005: 8-5
2006: 7-6

Maybe he meant 4 or 5 losses 4 or 5 years in a row.
I firmly believe that Joepa can still coach. Even though we beat them I felt that the fundamentals were there but not the talent.
I think that Joe has problems recruiting and that is his downfall. He is a grand old coach that I admire greatly but it is time. And that is my vote .
I don't really know what Bobby's problem is but he apparently should step down also.
