Phillip Fulmer isn't ready to do what Lloyd Carr did. The Tennessee coach wants to put the Volunteers on top one more time before he's through.

"I want to win another national championship," said the 57-year-old Fulmer, who won his lone national title in 1998. "I don't want to do this forever ... but I want to coach for a good while and get back to the top of that mountain."
Such a goal proved elusive for Carr, who won a national title with Michigan in 1997 and a handful of conference titles as well. Carr, 62, announced his retirement earlier this week after a season that included a loss to Appalachian State and a fourth straight defeat to rival Ohio State.

Word is that Clemson is not trying very hard to convince him to stay...they are ready to hand over the OC reigns to Dabo Swinney.

Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer made his team take an early morning run as punishment for the arrest of a freshman running back.
Daryl Vereen was charged with public intoxication early Monday morning.
After a Tennessee player was arrested for the second time in less than two weeks, Fulmer said he made the entire team run at 6 a.m. Tuesday to show he wasn't going to tolerate such behavior. He also said Vereen will have to do community service and participate in police ride-alongs as part of his violation of team rules.

I wasn't aware that teams were still having coach supervised/mandated practices. Doesn't the NCAA limit the number of practices that a team can have during the "off season"? I know that most teams will practice "on their own" and/or weight train during the "off season"; however, I didn't think that the coach was allowed to take an active role (i.e. require them to do anything.....like extra running).

Anyway it seems "really fair" to punish the whole team for one or two players violating the rules.

And extremely harsh. Good for Phil. Running at 6 AM - that is the sort of discipline that's been lacking at Tennessee these past 16 years. Rumor has it the next time a Tennessee player so much as robs a bank, there will be 5:30 wind sprints for the team AND graduate assistants.

Which of course brings up the old point about why they chose orange as their school colors.

You can wear orange at the game on Saturday, hunting on Sunday and picking up trash on the side of the road for the county/state Monday through Friday.

Although I never thought of Tennessee orange as resembling prison jumpsuits. Circus peanuts are more what come to mind.

Hahaha, I have never enjoyed a suspension like this.

Vereen went to our arch-rival's high school, so this is [censored]ing hilarious. Funniest thing on top of it is in his graduating class, they had a linebacker arrested 2 times his senior year for DUI. Leave it to a North Mecklenburg Viking to get in trouble with the law.
