He was from my hometown of Van Wert and graduated from BGSU. Both he and Jim Young (former Michigan asst., Purdue and Army coach) went to Van Wert and both remained friends after their playing days at BGSU and their coaching assignments at Michigan. Smith was a very good man and very well respected (especially off the field). I am sorry to hear of his death.

Sad news to hear, condolences to the family and friends of Coach Smith.
He must have been a real special person in his ability to relate to and influence young people. I'll never forget during Robert Smith's recruitment, that he publicly stated that Coach Smith was the "greatest" person he'd ever met. This was basically AS he was making his committment to TOSU. Robert was real clear that the only thing that kept him from going to USC was the distance, stating that if USC was in Ohio, or if he was in California, that he would have opted to play for Coach Smith.
RIP Coach.

Nice article I kept from awhile back. Good read, especially for younger crowd that may not remember Larry!

OK, I'll be the "asshole" here. Thanks to sandgk for posting this and also thanks to bluffton for a real nice article.
As I scroll through the various pages on this site, I see that 2,079 people have posted about what they like to drink, 1,380 have posted about the last movie they saw, a whopping 13,886 have posted about what song they are listening to as they type, and 885 felt inclined to talk about the trashiness of the Spears sisters.
On a topic lke this, however, when a well loved and respected Coach from Ohio passes away, only 4 posts show up? And 2 were from the same person? Coach Smith stood for what's great about intercollegiate athletics. He molded young people, he never ran a football factory. To have only a handful of posters show up and show their appreciation for this is sad. Really sad.
Peace.
