Mark Mangino Ponders Gastric By-Pass Surgery
Mark Mangino in Hospital for Tests - Prelude to Possible Gastric By-Pass Surgery
Quote:
Kansas coach Mark Mangino is hospitalized for tests
By DOUG TUCKER, AP Sports Writer
January 28, 2008
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Kansas coach Mark Mangino was expected to be released from a Lawrence hospital and return to work on Tuesday after undergoing tests.
Jim Marchiony, Kansas' associate athletic director, told The Associated Press he did not think the situation was a medical emergency for Mangino, who led the Jayhawks to a school-record 12-1 mark and an Orange Bowl victory over Virginia Tech. The 51-year-old was selected as the national coach of the year.
Close friends and family members have been concerned for years that Mangino's weight might one day pose a health concern. He is substantially overweight, and Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins has talked with him about considering gastric bypass surgery similar to what Perkins underwent in 2002.

I heard that he's able to motivate his players to playing better by taking off one garment of clothing after every mistake they make. If this is true, he may look better, but the Jayhawks may not have as much motivation as they did last year.

I'd have a tough time stapling my own stomach and bypassing part of my small intestine. First of all, doing it yourself rules out general anesthetia - and trying to see where to cut/staple/suture when you're that fat and laying on your back - damn near impossible.
Plus it eliminates the ability to sue for malpractice. But a college football coach making millions wouldn't do that.
