Some preliminary numbers from Purdue attendance... from 06
over 10% empty:
27k vs Northwestern 35k empty - almost 2/3!
40k vs Maryland 22k empty - almost 1/3!50k vs Indiana St 12k empty
51k vs Ball State 11k empty
53k vs Miami 9k empty
54k vs Minnesota 8k empty
PSU barely cleared 90% capacity.
...........
They aren't exactly a barnburner in attendance.

I'm glad you think you've got me pegged. I know perfectly well what the Rose Bowl means and the tradition behind it. Do you really think that tradition is so weak that Tulsa and Bowling Green playing a "meaningless" game in Alabama takes away from it? It's funny that someone who is so concerned about the bowl traditions would still chuck it away for a brand-new system.

Sorry, but if you're vain enough to think that the GMAC Bowl, MPC Computer Bowl, and the Motor City Bowl are driven by fan interest and think they are viable bowl games, then I'd like to sell you my California-Hawaii Bridge. The more bowls there are, the more it takes away from the overall "prestige" of being a "bowl team". There was a time when being invited to a bowl game was a great accomplishment, for just about any program. Now, it's almost a failure for most teams if they don't make it to a bowl.

Uh, the Northwestern game was at Northwestern. And the Maryland game was--guess what--a bowl game, so thanks for helping prove my point. And that was the 2006 season...let's take a look at their 2007 home attendance:
Eastern Illinois: 52,504
Central Michigan: 60,038
Notre Dame: 65,250
Ohio State: 65,497
Iowa: 58,123
Northwestern: 58,237
Michigan State: 55,630
They hit the skids after we beat them, and yet they at least were putting 55-58K in the seats in the midst of a 2-5 stretch. Barnburner? Nah. But hardly all that bad, and definitely enough to where you'd think they'd send a ton of folks to a bowl game only a few hours away.
