Who are the best and worst college football announcers/analysts?

As far as play-by-play, Keith Jackson in his prime (which ended about 10-15 years ago) would get the nod.

I'm surprised here of all places I only see one Chris Spielman nomination. Of all announcers currently going today, he's the only one who makes me want to watch a game just because of who's in the booth. He sees things nobody else does and has some of the best analysis.

Keith Jackson is of course the greatest of the great, speaking of all-time.

For radio, I'll bet it makes you guys green in the gills to listen to, but Bob Ufer was a hoot. I wish he'd been calling games when I was growing up. I love listening to Jim Brandstatter too.

Worst: I dunno about worst, but Bob Davie and whoever he calls games with can be downright annoying, for one reason: they called a couple UVA games this past year and absolutely butchered the pronunciation of half our guys' names. They do this a lot actually. It's called a media guide, fellas. Get a hold of one.

Musburger is great. I liked Danielson when he was with ESPN, but since he went to CBS, he's an SEC HOMER like all of them over there. I've always liked Keith jackson, but as he's gotten older (and more famous) I think it has gone to his head. I'll never forget that line after the 2002 NC game "Rest easy, Woody, there's a new man in town". That actually brought a tear to my eye.

Keith Jackson is past his prime, although he did an admirable job keeping Fouts in his place during the NC game.

Worst? Curt Gowdy doing the 1968 Rose Bowl NC game. Bruce Jankowski became "Janowicz" and he never knew who had the ball!

Of course, the cameraman didn't either.

I know that goes back a ways... I was only 13 that day, but I remember how mad I was at Gowdy for making so many mistakes.

Someone else mentioned Marv Homan ---- we used to listen to WMNI and Marv when Channel 4 was doing the Buckeyes hoops games in the 60s and I couldn't STAND listening to Jimmy Crum --- "HOW ABOUT THAT! WE'VE GOT A REAL BARN BURNER TONIGHT, FOLKS!"

I guess these last few years has really imprinted Musburger and Danielson in to my brain and I miss hearing those two do the games.

Overall, the Tirico/Herbstreidt/Corso Alamo Bowl was probably the worst.

Favorite- Danielson and Blackledge by far. They watch the game and comment on the game, a rare thing these days, and they're both good at it. None of that cutesy flirting Mussberger and Herbstreit do and they aren't jerks either.

Honorable mention for best- Spielman. His love for the game comes across every time he speaks. He even gets pumped up for Nevada-New Mexico St. games. Also the guy who worked the Washington and Northwestern games with Ron Franklin. Don't remember his name but he doesn't bash any teams which is refreshing. Mark Jones(IIRC) and Bob Davie who did the Minny game are enjoyable as well. I'd like to see Dick Vermeil come back and do some games. He was so fun to listen to on the last minute drive against ASU in the '97 Rose Bowl. Oh, and Thom Brennaman and Charles Davis.

Worst- Tim Brant. I've hated his guts ever since the '06 Oregon-UCLA game when he blatantly rooted for UCLA the entire time.

Honorable mention for worst- Sean who does the weeknight games with Spielman. I can't remember his last name but he is so dull and can be a real prick sometimes. Reece Davis, Lou Holtz, Mark May, Brent Mussberger(now. He used to be much better just a few years ago), Kirk Herbstreit, and many, many others make this list. There are just too many to count.

Keith Jackson is one of the all-time worsts. Never liked anything he did, and he was just meandering at the end of his career. Maybe he's still broadcasting, though, I don't know. Hope not. He's useless. Living off rep and a "voice" alone. Corso is enthusiastic and has always liked the Bucks, unlike Jackson. So, to the OP, you got it backwards. Corso is the "worst"? Please.

In all the prime time OSU games Corso has called over the past few years, he has only picked the Buckeyes to win once, in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. That technically makes him a jinx. He may jump on the band wagon in games where the Bucks show they are by far the better team, but he is far from a Buckeye supporter. Probably still bitter about all the ass kickings Woody's boys put on his Hoosiers.

Cowherd may be the worst excuse for a sports analyst ever. Even discounting his vitriol for the Buckeyes, the guy simply knows nothing about sports. His comments on the Wunderlik (sp?) Test were laughable, (paraphrasing) "If I'm a GM, the only position that I'm worried about intelligence is QB. Running backs? Who cares?". He thinks his common sense conclusions are somehow superior to the decisions made by people who have dedicated their lives to playing and managing sports at the highest level. Throw in his marathon recounts of how much money he makes and the great food he has whenever he visits Vegas, and it's all but unlistenable. Tony Kornheiser may not know much about sports, but at least he's funny once in a while.
